I am booking a late holiday for the family for the end of September, all the usual places like Spain, Portugal are around £900 for a 3* holiday.

However I have come across some 5* hotels in Marmaris, Dalaman etc for much much cheaper.

I have been told these wont be true 5* but they look amazing, also would you pick Turkey over Spain? The weather would be much better this time of year. Only been to EU places so a little worried why its so cheap.

I know this is not tripadviser but advice welcome :)

With all the ****** stuff going on in Turkey it lost its tourism and hence pretty much most or all hotels are empty so they are reducing prices to get more tourists travelling.
I would choose Spain over Turkey any day.

The above reasons explain why Turkey is s cheap.

The above reasons explain why I would be going to Spain instead.

and people worrying is why it is cheap...

you'll find cheap holidays in North African locations too - the very small chance of being involved in a violent event has increased substantially (relatively - though is still a very small chance)

Hateful place to go for a holiday. I'll never go back.

If you enjoy being hastled continuously by every bar owner, shop owner, restaurant owner, practically being dragged into their premises off the street.... yeah great, but otherwise stay well clear - and this was a few years back, before the current tourism slump!

Shock as tourist areas try to get tourist businesses. Had the same in Portugal and corfu and every med location I've been and and and...

Went to Turkey a few years ago and was fine in the main tourist areas. Let's face it every popular destination is a potential target. Spain hasn't exactly been immune to attacks, anyone remember eta?

A few years ago, my wife came across a deal that looked too good to miss, a week in Marmaris for silly money.
We'd done all the usual places, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, but never been to Turkey, so thought, why not?
Christ knows what airport we flew into, but it was a fairly long coach ride to Marmaris.
No big deal, all part of the holiday, but when we arrived, the first shock was to be told at reception, do NOT flush used toilet tissue down the toilet, put it in a bin next to the toilet bowl, the maid would collect and empty it daily, ewww.
No idea if this is true for all of Turkey, but we were told that the sewage pipes were narrower than other places, and were blocked easily.
Bars and restaurants were okay, and the Turkish lira was worth peanuts at the time compared to the pound, but the downside was that the resort's eating and drinking areas were running alive with pushy touts, plucking your sleeve, urging you to come in, and you'll get a free bottle of wine with your dinner.
All that importuning doesn't sit well with me, and I started off by politely saying, "No thanks", then I moved on to just ignoring them, but they seemed to take that as a challenge, and upped their game by trying German, or what sounded like some Scandinavian languages.
Eventually we just crossed the road as they approached, but one evening one of them called after my wife, "Come back darling, I'll buy you a drink."
She'd had enough, and snapped back, "**** off and leave me alone."
He called back, "You **** off, it's my country, go back to yours."
I turned to say something, but my wife sank her nails in my arm, he'd been joined by two others.
I wasn't mug enough to mix it with three guys a bit younger than me over a swear word, so we just walked on.
I'd probably try Istanbul sometime, but personally I'd give the resorts a miss, but try it by all means, for all I know it's the garden spot of the Middle East now.

Wow a bunch of scaredy cats in here.

As for touts and toilets. You get that in a lot of areas especially touts. Was in Portugal the other week and the older buildings toilet paper was meant to be placed in bins. Newer buildings were fine. If you don't like touts then go to less touristy areas.

Lot has changed in few years, your experiences are mainly typical perverts you see around hotel resorts.
Current problems are Turkey just dont know what it wants to be.
After Erdogan taking over power radical muslim population rised to power while before they were limited or isolated to their own towns now they are ravaging through the country with no one to hold them back. So its not the Turkey you have experienced few years ago, its much much worse hell even modern turkish people are running away for their life starting life in other countries.

Law has changed so much that you have to question their insanity.
Just one example is if a guy rapes a woman and if that guy marrys that same women then all is good no crime committed and he will not get sentenced.

I usually stay away from countries if they have ****** laws, no democracy and such such. If you are going with female companions just stay in hotel, thats all i can recommend lol.

It would be all inclusive, but want to do a bit of exploring, we were going to book Rhodes but been next to Turkey it seemed a nice idea to have a look, I guess they are cheap for a reason not one yet recommending it lol

Went to Olu Deniz a couple of times about 12 years ago. It was fantastic, and super cheap back then too (one holiday was £150pp for flights, accommodation, transfers, B&B for a week).

The "hassle" from touts and shopkeepers was consistent, but always seemed in pretty good humour. I found it quite fun to be honest.

Same in a lot of holiday destinations in my experience over the years. Unless it's a massive new development catered for obese westerners.

My friend went in May for this holiday with his wife and kids. Was very surprise how friendly everyone was and felt safe.

Only thing he didnt like it was full of Mancs :D But you cant have it all.

Flying out to Marmaris on the 25th of this month and i cant wait, staying in an all inclusive hotel with it's own private beach so no bother from any touts.

The weather forecast for sept/oct is in the 80s so nice and hot, i check trip advisor daily and nearly everyone is saying the same thing, fantastic place for a holiday and they can't wait to go back.

My sister has been 4 times and says it's a great place for a holiday so they must be doing something right.

This is what you are supporting by spending your money in Turkey. Talk about morals.
