Multi Zone Smart Thermostats

Opentherm is doing a great job as well. It's learning what it takes to keep each room at a set temperature.
This morning the boiler has a flow temperature of between 32 - 38c. So even in winter it should be well working the temperatures for it to condense.

Honestly, I would question if whatever smart systems you are implementing are worth the money. £400+ for two Nest thermostats - how quickly will they make that money back vs a simple timer+dumb thermostat equivalent?

It's more down to a change in heating philosophy, I replaced a dumb timer and 2 thermostats in my 2 zone house in Jan this year with 2 nests, I have already saved over £100 total in monthly reductions on my Gas bill.

The heating is only on when we are in, for a young family this is a God send with erratic schedules, when we are not in the thermostats drop into eco mode only heating the property if the temp drops below 12c. Before it would come on if we were there or not.

The digital thermostats are far more accurate than the mechanical ones, the mechanical ones we did have had about a 4c accuracy, the nests have a 0.5c accuracy, some maintaining the temperature you want is far easier.

Additionally with nests it learned a schedule and calculates heat up time of the zones based on learned data and external weather forecast, this ensures that no one is pressing the boost buttons or artificial increasing the setting to get the zones to temperature quickly.

And one last thing, the app on my phone easily allows me to see if one of the kids has played and I can remotely correct the setting, before they had a habit of fiddling an we would not be aware until it was too hot.

If you go on their chat, they usually do some kind of discount (unless a sale is on at the minute).

The kit is great for iOS users or those with only one zone, but seems to me to be a bit pointless for multiple zones or where location services aren't reliable.

They have a discount on the rental at the moment.
Sounds like its working as you'd hoped Rob. If all goes to plan my system should give me the same control and flexibility when its eventually finished as yours.

That is what i want to do with tado via the use of their trv's. the main reason for me leaning towards them. My room, little ones room and the lounge all to come on and go off at seperate times

I just installed Tado (simply the tado and extension kit as I didn't have a thermostat at all). Easy to set up, very good onboarding in my opinion. Set and forget now after fiddling.

At first I thought it wasn't working as when I set the temp it didn't immediately fire up. Apparently it's a safety feature to stop the boiler firing up and off and up again in quick succession.

Was it easy to install?

Absolutely. You tell them your boiler and they give you very easy very clear step by step diagrams.

I really rate the Tado system, been running it for nearly a year now, so this winter will be the test :)
Have some reviews on my YouTube channel if you want to see how its setup, its mega easy.

We use evohome, their TRVs on multiple rads plus a couple of their wireless thermostats throughout. We don’t use the hot water part as we have a megaflo and I keep the hot water call always on and let the megaflo manage the temperature itself.

Not sure if it saves us money but the flexibility is great and love how you can simply turn the temperature on a TRV up down and it fires up the system instantly for just that room. I don’t think I could ever go back to a system that doesn’t let you control each zone/rad.

We have a terraced three storey house and we have morning programmes for example that only heat our bedroom, one of the bathrooms, kitchen and extension which are the only areas we use then. Then evening after work lounge, extension, dining followed by our bedroom. I’m sure this is a lot more efficient than just pumping heat to all rads needlessly (only two of us live in a four bedroom house)

Ive finally made a decision and ordered Tado. 1 Thermostat with extension kit and 3 trv's.

They arrived this morning and ive just registered the devices on my tado account but unfortunately they dont have instructions for my boiler, so they will find some and let me know when they have. So for now ive got to play the waiting game.

Ah that’s a bummer. Which boiler do you have? Their service is good. They’ll come back to you.

Envious on the TRVs. Next purchase!

Bummer. I’ve the main combi eco elite. Can’t be that different surely so hopefully a guide soon as they had mine. Just a little tweak I imagine.

I've got Tado at home and 6 of the TRVs.

Only two radiators in the house don't have a Tado TRV on at the moment (kitchen and conservatory). System works really well and we have various rooms set up for heating at different time. Probably will take years to make back the saving vs the purchase cost, but the ability to control each room's temperature at different times of the day is well worth it for us.

For those that have Tado or Honeywell Evohome can you control them via Amazon Alexa?

Must admit I was looking at Nest but after reading this thread I prefer the multi-zone setup from Evohome (although it would cost around £1,000 with all the TRV's)

And for those that have installed 2 Nest's how are these wired to the boiler?! Normal house just one thermostat so how do you add another zone?

Yes Alexa works with evohome, as does ifttt.

Nest with 2 zones just requires a zone valve to control flow to downstairs, upstairs or both.

(SORRY TO HIJACK AGAIN)

So which would people say is the ideal and "best" system interms of obtaining a "smart home"?

The Nest looks pretty and can control zones but cant control individual rooms or radiators but it probably has the best geofencing features and the ability to learn your schedule. Its also the cheapest outlay as you only pay for the thermostat/thermostats.

Tado and EcoHome seem to be about the same on features and cost about the same. Initial outlay can be more expensive and if you want to create multiple zones using TVR's then the costs can mount up BIG time depending on how many rad's you have or want to control......

Personally, after reading this thread and getting educated I am now leaning more towards the Tado system....

Correct me if im wrong.....the tado system (and the evohome) achieves multizones by adding TVR's to rads and then individually controlling them?
So you would only need the one thermostat downstairs and not another one upstairs?

Is that right?
