Hello chaps, I’m after a good coat for this winter's dog walking. Barbour wax jackets—do members consider them worth the extra bucks on the price tag? I quite liked the one I tried on but there are a lot of similar products online so I don't want to waste money for a big brand name. I’ve searched and found a few threads here so I’m wondering how those who bought one are faring as I don’t mind paying more for a product if it lasts a very long time.

My step dads father died recently and somehow i was given his Barbour jacket exactly as you say, wax style

I have no idea of the age but its certainly 10 years plus old, initially i was like erm why do i want this. Then when setting up a show in the cold wind and rain i remembered it was in my boot

Wow is all i can say, it certainly felt quality and did exactly what it should. I would get one if i needed one

We were in London a few weeks ago. In Tshirts...Then the heavens opened we walked into a Barbour shop and walked out with 3 Jackets. 2 wax ans a lighter summer one...

The mrs got one with a hood....I forgot that bit..lol

Yeah I rate them quite highly though I'm sure there is better out there for the cash.

Ever since they got popular in that there London the price has skyrocketed. Sure they used to be a lot cheaper in countrywide 10 years ago.

Ive had a couple of the Ashby line but keep losing them.

My brother has a couple and absolutely loves them in winter. I would probably buy something cheaper. But it's the kind of item that you buy and keep for many, many years. So it's ultimately cheaper than buying a cheap new jacket frequently.

Wouldn't an umbrella have been significantly cheaper? :p

I sold mine not long back - as new for £30 - guy who had it snapped my fingers off - realised why when checked price - £200 !! it only cost me 49 quid years ago so wasn't that bothered - Reason I sold it was I find they do not keep me warm - very thin even with the lining - I replaced it years ago with a Open Field Country Wear wax jacket - much thicker and a lot warmer. - The place to buy from is a Game Fair or country fair - even probably a horse fair.

They're a bit on the heavy side compared to a modern technical jackets, but they are very good,

Incidentally, I have 2x Paramo jackets, I've had one of them for 10 years - it's been all over the world, from -20 degrees in Finland to the deserts of new mexico and it still doesn't have any holes or tears.

I like them and think they're worth the extra but I'd also look at Fjallraven if I were buying a jacket now, albeit a bit more expensive they're probably a bit better.

They are heavy, restrict movement, don't breath, get dirty and will ultimately get wet in bad weather, plus it makes you look like a Chav, unless you step out of a Range Rover and go pheasant shooting.

What if you actually live in the countryside and frequently have to wear wellies? :p

Second hand Barbour jackets can be had quite cheaply. I got a vary serviceable one from the Stables Market in Camden 2 years ago for 30 quid. I wear it most days in the winter and have re-oiled it. I like mine it has big pockets, I don't care if it gets dirty and it's supposed to look baggy so I've got ample room for layers under it.

Prefer something with Gore-Tex or a similar approach to the outer material for winter use and padded inside. Nothing else keeps me dry, warm and comfortable like it.

Just to offer an alternative point of view, I bought a waxed jacket from Barbour and the arm fell off within a week. This was from John Lewis so not an eBay fake. Bought some gloves too, they split in a few days.

Never had any problems with other brands from H&M through to North Face.

Bought one two winters ago, still going strong. Looks good, keeps you dry and it's not overly heavy but does keep you warm. Having the hood as an additional cost extra is a bit cheeky though.
I'd definitely buy another one when this one dies, and I hate spending money on clothes.

Had my Barbour Bedale for over 30 years , not many jackets out there that can stand a deluge constantly whilst doing some hard graft in the field and still 100% waterproof with a rewax evey couple of years , bit biased about mine as it was made in my home village of Newcastleton in the 80's

Where I live the people with Barbour jackets are the totally opposite of chavs. Think Range Rover, wellies, dogs and a couple of shotguns.
