Well mental illness is a pretty broad term and is constantly expanding. It is essentially ways of describing a lack of normal behaviour (either through biology, chemistry or psychology) . Simply the suicide could be classed as a mental illness technically.

Definition of mental illness
:any of a broad range of medical conditions (such as major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, or panic disorder) that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning

Mass murdering defenceless civilians would not be associated with someone who was displaying normal behaviour, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning would it?

It is a massive can of worms admittedly but I have no doubt that a medical professional would have not deemed this mans behaviour normal.

mentally unless is broken down in to very specific diagnoses in asking which you think he had.

I've not linked the killer to ANY political leaning, all I've speculated is that it could very well be a suicidal man who has decided to take out as many people as possible with him (Which is very often the case in these mass shootings)

Note I'm not saying this particular guy could be a muslim (I mean technically he could be but given what we know it doesn't seem likely) but the other poster is adamant that 'a' mass murderer doing something like this would be mentally ill and that doesn't have to be the case - belief in something like Islam (just for example) could lead to someone being radicalised and doing something like this without the need for them to be mentally ill. I'm simply pointing out that people throw around these mental illness ideas when there are plenty of people who have conducted mass killing events who generally aren't.

Fairly famous YouTuber accidentally (in all honesty) got a .50 cal sniper rifle into a hotel room in Las Vegas in a hotel with a strict no gun policy - with the right packing probably no one would notice unless they metal detector screened all guests on arrival.

Often seems to be the way with these kind of shootings but weird how relatively quickly it ended versus the level of preparation - but then amongst other things I guess people don't anticipate the impact it will have on them mentally, etc. once it has started.

Having been to Vegas a fair few times no one takes the blindest bit of notice what you take into your room.

You could have a suitcase full of guns, no one would know. He'd been there a few days apparently. Could have bought a suitcase full of guns in every day for all the hotel would have known.
