Mass Shooting in Las Vegas

Looks like you’re correct about the registration/licensing so I take that back. www.nevadacarry.org

I don’t believe that fully automatic weapons are permitted for normal citizens though.

Obviously they are otherwise you wouldn't have hundreds of videos on youtube with US citizens firing full auto weapons.
Unless of course the police have rounded them all up and arrested them!

Seems like he lost his pilots licence in 2008 as he never passed the mental tests. Only in America can that person then be allowed to keep his guns and go buy more.

sorry if this is off topic but as it's getting into gun nerd territory I might as well throw in a comment :)

200 actually but it doesn't matter you can break one of them down into a 100 round belt if required and/or indeed join them up too... the drum or box you attach to the weapon is just for convenience when patrolling... for example with a minimi you'd have one (either plastic or canvas) that you can place a 200 round belt into.. this just saves it from getting in the way when patrolling... likewise with the GPMG there is a small box you can attach too (it is less common though we acquired some in Iraq) and fill with (IIRC it was 100 rounds) - this again simply saves you from having a lose belt of 50-100 rounds dangling off the thing on patrol.. of course in the case of the GPMG if you get into a contact that initial box (or loose belt) doesn't last very long and you're quite quickly going to slap on one of the much larger belts of 7.62 you and/or your buddy is carrying... in the case of the minimi you might well have a second box or canvas bag thing with 200 rounds on your person but again probably have some loose belts of 5.56 in your daysack too.

anyway this is all bit off topic basically this box/belt thing is silly - a LMG (such as the minimi or M249 in the US) or MMG (such as a GPMG) simply takes a belt of ammunition... whether or not you've decided to coil this belt up and put it in a box or canvas bag or not isn't really relevant here... if anything it is rather impractical as the shooter is quite clearly going to want to use rather more ammunition

For military use yeah - civilian use in the US the more readily available stuff tends to be 100 round capacity. Box mags generally for convenience but many of the drum mags have their own internal system for locking rounds into place (though you can get ones you wind a belt into). The 100 and 200 round belts I've seen used at civilian ranges don't tend to be easy to join together.

I watched tons of videos of him shooting, the sound of gunfire matches the magazine capacity of a standard magazine, not to say! He couldn't have a drum magazine, he might had one or two of them.

this is how quickly a standard magazine gets emptied in an M16:

the clips posted earlier, though not great sound, contain longer bursts of fire than that... possibly (given the reports of multiple rifles) he's some maniac with one in each hand, the second firing immediately after the first stops, just blatting away in the vague direction of the mass of people ergo the continuous sound of a much longer burst (or perhaps some silly drum magazine on his rifle)...

but otherwise I'd suspect he's using a machine gun... as the burst certainly sound like far more rounds than a standard magazine would carry

Although I don't think its a machinegun and likely a modified assault rifle with high capacity type magazine of some kind - probably drum mag - the length of the bursts and perception of rate of fire is much more consistent with that of 100 rounds fed through an m60, etc.

EDIT: Compare first hit for "m60 100 rounds" (swearing so won't link) on youtube to the 2 minute video that has 3 volleys in you'll see what I mean.

How does losing a pilots licence equate to not being allowed to own a gun? What mental tests exactly? Are we talking some straight maths exams, or something actually alluding to his mental health?

The UK should now issue a blanket ban on white American males entering the country until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

The sheer level of CSI like analysis in this thread is staggering :D so many experts!
It's the curse of revolving news. Time was, you'd wait until the morning papers when someone actually knew something. Now we have to know right now, and if no one knows to tell us, then we're damn sure gonna guess.

Well the whole "give everyone guns to stop the bad guys with guns" crowd seem to have gone quiet on this one. Maybe because everyone in Vagas already has guns.

Exactly, I mean who'd have though people would chat about stuff in the news or offer opinions etc.. on an Internet forum....

/stupid but interesting question;

What will become of the hotel? usually after these sorts of shootings (Sandy hook / Orlando nightclub) the buildings involved are bulldozed or shut down, it's a huge hotel, but who on earth is going to want to check in there now.. ?

Bit of a daft comment. I said earlier pre 1986 full autos are legal. Other videos could involve licensed firearms dealers or could be associated with a range.

I don’t believe that full auto guns are widely owned but happy to hear good evidence otherwise.

Me. Heading there on Saturday for a conference. I imagine they will have the actual shooting venue wih is 400 m across the road closed down for a good time. But the hotel will just remain as its only where the shooter was, rathr than were people were shot.

It seems according to reports he was firing from the 32nd floor. How do you fire a weapon with that kind of speed from that distance and injure hundreds of people on the ground below?

Fully automatic weapon, 800 rounds per minute, each bullet travels at ~1,700 miles per hour. Unleash that kind of firepower into a densely packed crowd, and you're onto a winner.
