So what do we all think about this? You are either born either male or female. Your mind is what makes you believe you are something else. This doesn't necessarily mean it's true. People with paranoid schizophrenia hear voices and see things that aren't there or that people are out to get them, doesn't mean it's true.
I guess they look at gender and sex as two different things, sex being biology and gender being a social construct.

Is it psychological illness?

There are notions in the way for this to come to other countries too, including the UK.

While I have no care regarding if people are gay/lesbian it really doesn't bother me if they want to be that way. Although it doesn't affect me or bother me, it's just interesting to see where things like this are going in the future.

What are your thoughts regarding this?

Liberals gone mad.

They also made it so that it's not a federal crime to infect someone with HIV, since they say it's "discriminated" against the gay community and other HIV carriers.

Mad.

I'll never understand why people get their heckles up about things like this. I couldn't care less how a person in California sees themselves in terms of gender, nor how the State feels about it legally.

We seem to live in a new world filled with the perpetually outraged.

Bit of a dumb headline, not doubt put up to infuriate the outraged uneducated, as will not doubt be shown in this thread.

They have not recognised a 'third 'gender' at all, just allowed people to determine themselves as non-gender specific, it is no big deal.

Indeed, only took the first response as well to this thread

Completely agree. My father seems to get riled up by all sorts of things like this - it will be gays on Star Trek tonight. I really can't comprehend why he gives a ****. He's not gay, my sister isn't gay, I'm not gay, if we were then he'd have to accept it. None of us are some sort of inter-gender. Why the **** does it matter if someone feels more content by relabeling themselves.

this is a insult towards science and human biology.

gender
/ˈdʒɛndə/
noun

  1. the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).
Might want to read a bit before getting all riled up :p

And really - how does it affect you in the slightest that California has done this? Has the sky fallen in?

Senate Bill 179 will make it an easier process for individuals who want to change their gender on legal documents. The law states that a person would no longer require a sworn statement from a physician, approving the gender transition, for the legal document to reflect a different gender

I mean, that doesn't read all that scary to me. Hardly a disaster of biblical proportions, Old Testament, real Wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

I don't have a problem with people calling themselves whatever they want but some things you cannot "decide" and gender is one of them. You might not feel like a man or a woman but 99.9% of people are biologically one or the other.

pfft if they want to then that is up to them, doesn't affect me personally if someone wants to identify as something

I do find a lot of it highly amusing though - especially some of the arguments/mental gymnastics around trans stuff - like you're supposedly transphobic if you state you'd not date any trans women etc..

frankly it is sexual attraction not gender attraction.. I'm attracted to people based on their sex not what gender they identify as... if Barbara Palvin and a bunch of other VS models all decided to identify as 'men' I'd still find them attractive and I wouldn't consider myself gay for doing so.... but others have a different perspective with amusing results:

Yeah I edited my post, I worded it wrong because of gender being a social construct but it's typically used in that sense, the truth of it is that it's a state of either being male, or female. Which falls down to biology.
It doesn't affect me as I already stated in the OP. But this will end up coming to the UK too. I just wanted to gauge opinions of it and where things are heading.

Sex =/= gender =/= sexuality.

In before 25 page thread of people who don't understand the above whinging about something that doesn't affect them in the slightest.

We do seem fairly obsessed with external physical gender. Personally I think it's time we moved past that

Putting things in Bins is just the simple way to do it imo. But I do appreciate it has difficulties due to how ingrained in a lot of our systems it is

So what do we all think about this? I personally think it's a load of nonsense. You are either born either male or female.

Yes.

There is no inbetween, or third gender.

Sex is not the same as gender. Sex is male or female, or some sort of in between mess. A **** up, you might say. Gender is a spectrum and does not always correlate directly with sex.

Uh... yeah. That's exactly what gender is. Congratulations on both understanding and not understanding the problem at the same time. You've achieved a non-binary understanding of non-binary gender.

No. Gender dysphoria is, if you can't reconcile your gender with your sex or sexuality, but that's not the same thing.

Big who cares.

Gender is a psychological and social issue, not a biological one. Biology doesn't get a say.

It doesn't affect you or bother you, but you're not happy about it. Awesome.

I don't really care what people call themselves, but if someone has a go at me because they are, for all reasoning, looking as a specific sex would then it'll get my back up.

I worked with a lesbian female, who dressed like a bloke, who never told anyone what sex she was or associated with and chose a gender neutral name to be called by who would get offended if she was referred to as male or female. She went mental when she thought someone referred to her as IT, they hadn't, she'd got the wrong end of the stick.

It's confusing.

As long as they are happy, with whatever they want to be then great for them :)
