Broken into, nothing taken

Why would they go to the effort to break into someone’s house for a run of the mill Golf? If it was a Golf R or Audi RS3 then maybe yeah.

I suspect they wanted to give it the once over for cash and booze but got disturbed or disappointed maybe?

It's a GTI op said they are targeted just as much as the R. I've even heard of diesel A3's getting take a lot lately as long as they have the S Line bodykit on. Seems there's a massive market for German parts on the black market

I agree on the car front, it's nothing special and I don't think the keys were hidden anyway.

There was obvious stuff lying around that you'd think they'd pick up and put in their pockets even, like watches, jewellery and a bit of cash.

Not enough for someone to retire on, but if you're there why not take it.

Really odd.

TBF, my mate used to have a V5 Golf and went out one morning, still a bit pre coffee and nearly sat in his car before he realised someone had stripped the interior overnight.

Happened to my bro a few years back. Nothing was taken but the loft door had been opened concerning he had never been up there since he had the house.

The police told me they go for cars like that as they are relatively quick, five doors and don't stand out too much so they can use them for other jobs.

Maybe they were after the keys but couldn't find them? The car was most probably the target if it's a GTI.

I have heard of the expression "stolen to order" with respect to new or expensive cars. Then the car ends up in a shipping crate and gets sent to Russia. What does the expression mean though? Is it an organised crime where a gang targets specific cars then sell them overseas, as opposed to targeting households blindly?

Maybe they were after the keys but couldn't find them? The car was most probably the target if it's a GTI. When I was done the first time they literally came in, looked around downstairs and found the car keys, grabbed my laptop and drove off without even waking me. Second time I think it was amateur hour as they tore the whole house apart and still only took my laptop and watch. They didn't find my car keys though as I'd learnt after the first time to hide things well.

The issue with hiding things like car keys is you run the risk of you/your family being threatened and/or attacked to give them the car keys if that is what they're after. Leave them in an easy to get place if You're in the house, cars can be replaced, that's what insurance is for. Not worth the risk of you or your being brutally attacked/killed for a bit of metal that can be replaced. Especially if youve already been burgled twice then the likelihood of it happening again is high.

If they recently moved in maybe the previous owners needed to break in to get the hidden drugs stash they forgot.

Change your toothbrushes or the heads if electric.

You'll regret if in a month when you get photos through the post of your toothbrushes stuck up some hairy backside. Ewwww

I only do it if we are going away and leaving the car. It worked the second time as they didn't find the keys. However, now, the neighbours all have better cars and worse security than me so my house is less of a target! :)

Yeh that's fair enough when you are away and have left the car. Certainly not when you/your family are in the house.

Yes, and look forward to sky high insurance costs for years to come.

Hmm higher insurance cost or have you and your family attacked/killed.... with my wife and less than 2 year old daughter in the house I'd give them the keys immediately. Why quote only part of the post? The whole point is would you rather have your family physically hurt just so they didn't get your car which could be replaced?

It was probably the police who thought you were up to something, couldn't get a search warrant, and made it look like a break and enter job. Didn't take anything so you'd have no damages to claim. Happened to me once. They left almost $1000 cash sitting there on top of the dresser. So obvious.
