Is Anyone Still Trying To Palm Off Old Pound Coins On You?

I just paid a taxi fare and as the driver seemed a bit of a surly git, instead of giving him the usual tenner I only gave him £8 (a five and three £1 coins). He immediately noticed one of the £1 coins was an old one. On checking the coins in my pocket to give him a new one I notice I had another three old ones (as well as some new ones).

It was only when I got out of the taxi I fully realised the ball-bag had seemed a little accusatory - as if I'd tried to fiddle him.

Any road up our kid, I realised I'm going to have to check my change for the foreseeable future to make sure I'm being given the new coins.

ANYONE ELSE had the same problem? .

Lincolnshire Co-ops are still accepting the old pound coins, as they're partnered with the Post Office and can change them easily.

I managed to palm off a very dodgy looking one to a shop the other day so feel like I have struck a blow for the little person.
The Op seems to be complaining about people doing to him what he tried to do to someone else...

It was simply that I hadn't checked. But you would think staff in shops would be keeping an eye out.

The only thing I'm guilty of is being too trusting.

Does EVERYONE else on here make a point of checking? I don't normally check change anyway - just bung it in my pocket.

yup that's what I think he meant too

I mean he's objected to the taxi driver being a little accusatory as if he tried to fiddle him... when that is exactly what he did do whether intentional or not

Well i imagine shop assistance doing the grind on a till don't check the coins for a few reasons. To them it is a bit of a waste of time when banks still accept them, they are not willing to argue a point of not taking them to a customer and risk them kicking off and they likely expect their till floats to have new coins, as they would usually have come from the bank recently or prepped by whoever holds the cash.

I accepted some yesterday, didn't really care. Ended up spending them in the evening.
