Young Men Playing Video Games Instead Of Finding Jobs

Perpetual growth is impossible. Resources are pressured. Robots are coming. It's only going to get harder for people to be seen as good value to a company.
Apparently deep learning will make most people secondary in company resources. I think Elon Musk was arguing that, sounds like an exaggeration but maybe he is just seeing it too soon. The scale roughly would be equal to machines arriving on farms and most of the workforce no longer being required as previously but it was also the case farms used to sell in their county not retail all over the world

There could be a bit of spin in the story, it could just be that they can't find jobs due to the local economy and are filling their spare time but the government has been trying to spin that there are a surplus of jobs for years now.

TBH men get the short end of the stick again, if you're a young girl/woman you just have to get pregnant and nobody looks down on you for claiming even more money in benefits.

A little war will give them something to do.

That, or just become a cam girl and rake in thousands from the same men this thread is talking about. :p Life is on easy mode if you're a female.

yes I have been made redundant twice

promotions have been on merit, obviously

never had an inheritance and never will

purchased first house in 90s with double digit interest rates

Boom. Purchased in the 90's with double digit interest rates.

I'll take your 90's house price with 18% interest over the current prices with much lower rates any day of the week.

House prices have risen far beyond what you would have paid back then.

So the luck you mentioned you didn't know about was there all along. You were part of a generation that could purchase when the average house price wasn't anywhere between 10 and 50 times the average yearly salary and as a consequence, you didn't need an absolutely massive deposit to secure your mortgage.

Seemingly not a generational thing, given the study only refers to men.

Given that if you exclude games like candy crush the overwhelming majority of time spent playing computer and console games globally is by men.... be they employed or not maybe the article is more a symptom applicable to men of a wider trend for a generation?

No a totally conclusive example or one with a methodology that doesn't leave a little to be desired... but some studies indicate that only a rather small percentage of Steam traffic is down to women

Maybe. Perhaps the women are all watching makeup videos on YouTube or something. Someone commission a study.

At least they're doing what makes them happy, which is more than can be said for a huge proportion of people working a 9-5 office job for the sake of simply earning money and not a lot else. Then there's the ones earning a fortune but with no time to spend it until they're retired and their life's mostly passed. There's far too many people who just do the normal.

But are they really? Or just an excuse for them to do the bare minimum because that's the easiest thing to do?

I used to play WoW in work (when employed not self employed). It did consume my life back then and part of the reason I became so good at business was I took the dedication and organisation I gained from WoW and put all my time in to my business instead.

I bet if most hard-core wow players stopped playing they'd excel at anything they set their minds to.

I'll second this. I like playing video games, but I'm sometimes guilty of doing it because it's an easy way to pass the time. I could put in some effort and go play the piano for half an hour instead and it'd be harder work but far more rewarding and far more likely to actually impress someone or be worth something one day.
