Last time I checked, there's very little performance difference in games between the 290/X and the RX580, unless, of course, there's something specific in mind. I'd aim higher/wait a little longer. :)

Or, maybe you don't have the 290X in your sig?

It was for a system with a HD7850.
 
Is the 580 a worthwhile upgrade from a R9 280? I've got a bit lost with which of the 280/380/480/580's are upgrades or only really renamings of the previous version! N.b. CPU is a 8350

I made the upgrade from 7970 to Fury pro. Very similar performance jump as you would get going from a 280 to the 580. I'll say it was well worth it. Noticeable difference. All games now have higher settings and resolution and still higher fps

Made the upgrade (bought in last weekend's deal-of-the-day). Got a surprise when I swapped cards .... my previous card was a 280X and not a plain 280!

Anyway, ran 3DMark benchmarks - basically looks like I'm getting a 30% improvement (60% on DX12 TimeSpy) ... but the main test was starting Project Cars 2 and having a drive round Oulton Park (I'm doing a career mode staring in F5!) where I'd previously noticed a bit of stuttering at the top corner where there are lots of trees an shadows and found fps dropping into the 40s there... now getting solid 60fps all the way round so job done!
