Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm thinking of switching to Virgin Media - VIP bundle. Anyone know of any offers/discounts? Currently thinking of going for the student deal (£86/month with £125 quidco). 12 month contract.

Got my home install kit today but can't use it as the supplied coax cables are not long enough.
Anyone know of a good compatible extension to use instead of the 1m ones that come with it.
Fyi - need about 5m.

Nvm
Phoned up and they agreed to send engineer out next weekend for free.

Seen a few references to it but just wondering how many of you guys here are using VM with pfSense. I am getting virgin installed in a few weeks and I am going to time it with spinning up pfSense in a VM.

From what I gather it should be straight forward to do, stick the Superhub in modem mode, connect it to my 'router' and then connect back out to a router/AP to do the wireless work?

Cheers

EDIT: Was very daft of me but I didn't do much research into Virgin but reading the past few pages here and the monster thread on the virgin forums I am questioning my decisions. Whilst I only play a bit of Fifa and COD on the Xbox I don't want to be suffering the major lag that plagues everyone with a SH3.

If I purchase a separate router will that problem go away? I am happy to do that so I can enjoy the tasty 300mb download but if not then I will cancel. I only signed the contract two days ago so still in the 'cooling off period' I believe. Cheers

No it won't go away unfortunately mate. It's the puma chipset that's produced by intel that causes the issue so even putting this SH3 in Modem mode to use with another router will produced the same issue. Apparently there has been a firmware release that fixes ICMP ping spikes and it's got no to very little jitter but TCP has massive ping spikes. So while some pings may look okay using ICMP, TCP which is commonly used in a lot of tasks including gaming will be affected still and that is including modem mode.
Video below demonstrating the issue.

Damn, I may have to evaluate my decision.

I only play Fifa really and a bit of COD but can I deal with the latency. The 300mb download would be very nice though.

Well i know some on here claim to not notice it. But im not sure how big of gamers they are because everyday use such as streaming and surfing the net i would assume you would not notice any problems which is why i guess VM don't want to acknowledge the issue. But Gaming is super sensitive to latency as gamers like low pings not big pings as big pings or jitter (ping fluctuations from 30ms to 200 for split seconds) is often called "LAG" :(
Bad thing is gaming isn't even bandwidth intensive it just trickles and tickles bandwidth so for gamers i would avoid VM but for anything else should be fine.

It's just appealing to be able to download those 50-100Gb games in 20 - 30 mins and have all those updates done in seconds i know but id prefer to wait sometime rather than have the headache of lag lol.

I am torn, I have to admit.

80% of my time is browsing, the other Fifa. Everyone else in my house is 100% browsing. Do I go with Virgin and enjoy the downloads and pray that a fix will come, be it firmware or new hub or do I go elsewhere.

The deal I have signed for is 350mb, VIP bundle (Sky and BT sports particularly important for me and my dad) and two boxes for £75 a month so its a great deal really. An option could be to have an ADSL line as well and just use that for gaming , I am not sure how viable that is however.

Well it sounds like most stuff you use the internet for in your household isn't particularly latency dependant like gaming is. So If i was you id certainly consider it if you have a few members of family streaming stuff.
And yea you could also use a ADSL/VDSL line purely for just gaming. Get a slower cheaper speed as gaming requires just low latency not huge speeds. However this would be expensive per month lol. So if its a 12 month contract and you only do a bit of gaming id just give it a shot and you might be lucky and not notice it.

Perhaps not so much in fifa as that seems to manage with poor connections better than other games unlike COD or other FPS games.

Cheers mate, I think I’ll go ahead with the install. The price for the Tv is cheap and it’s what my parents want. The broadband issue I will have to see personally see and decide on.

Does anyone know if I have a cooling off period with the Virgin contract after it’s all been installed?

Thanks

How did you manage to get that package for £75/month? The cheapest I can see the VIP bundle is £86/month and thats with student discount?

Yes, the standard 14 days
Cool, thanks for confirming.

A friend who is with them already organised something for me, i got a call from the 'mates rates' team.
£75 for VIP bundle, 2 boxes, 350mb VIVID.

Once I am signed up and happy with it, I will refer you if you like.

Just upgraded to v6 box with sh3 mix to and 200mbs (£60/month)

Had the latency issue on logs, although can't say I noticed while playing counter strike.

Rang up and had them reactivate my old SH2ac, issues gone, same speed

There's some serious talk of a proper TCP/UDP data packet fix from Intel going to the modem maker very soon
Could I request a sh2? Or perhaps just a modem from them?

Nope. They don't have any more stock, and the system is set up to order you a SH3 no matter what. You just have to tough it out until a fix arrives (maybe possible if recent talk is to be believed) or a SH4 arrives.
