**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

When do you guys change your tyres? Do you do it when they get to around 3mm and performance starts to drop off, or do you wait until they are closer to the 1.6mm legal limit?

I change when they are at about 3mm, but i have run them to the limit in the past. Just have to go easy in the wet.

Cool, thanks both. Think I'm somewhere between 3-4mm so I know they are due in the near future. Tempted to let them get close to 2mm unless grip noticeably becomes an issue.

Anyone here ever used NANKANG SPORTNEX NS-2R Tyres? Road legal track tyres. Got some track alloys, so i need to wrap some rubber around them and these have popped up for £70 a tyre.

I haven't tried them but they're supposed to be reasonably good in the dry, lethal in the wet though

Far from lethal but they aren't great, they are miles better than their equivalent which is the Federal 595 RSR. They are VERY good as a dry tyre for the money but I wouldn't have them again, I'd spend a bit more and buy the AD08R if it isn't a massive leap in your size.

NS2R is noisy and cheaply made but sticks like **** to a blanket in the dry.

I'm on my second set of AD08R and won't even think about looking at anything else when it comes to replacing them again

Had 4 PS4 (Non-s) fitted last week - gave them a good scrubbing in on a trip down to Cornwall & they felt good. I was under the impression an alignment was needed, as my fronts had noticeably more wear towards the inner edges but the local fitter put it up on their machine & said all was good (Supertracker I believe). Worth going somewhere with a Hunter for a second opinion?

What are your thoughts on XL tyres? They are the about the same price as standard versions but have a better fuel rating? where's the disadvantage? poor ride quality, grip?

I need two new fronts for my Octavia and was looking at Eagle F1 AS3 (225/45/17).

Designed to run at higher pressure. Hence tend to be heavier and noise due to the extra steel cords in place of nylon.

Better FE is likely due to higher pressures than the actual tyre.

Stick to normal if you don’t need XL (375-400kg per corner)

So... tyres are confusing. My Z4 35iS currently has run-flat Bridgestone Potenza RE050As all round. Rear is 255/30R19 and front is 225/35R19.

The rears need replacing after 12,000 miles. I don't drive gently and I'm happy to replace them after this mileage.

However, the car feels a bit skittish when it's cold and many other owners say this goes away when changing to non run flat, decent tyres. Not to mention a slightly nicer ride and less road noise. This probably means replacing all four.

So that leaves the question of which tyres to replace them with? The following is taken from black circles:

- Michelin Pilot Sport 4S: 2x front @ £189ea, 2x rear @ £223ea = £784 (including £40 off promo)
- Continental Sport Contact 6: 2x front @ £157ea, 2x rear @ £199ea = £711
- Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 3: 2x front @£138ea, 2x rear @ £181ea = £639

I believe the F1A3 is a much older tyre than the other two? Is it still a good tyre by today's standards? Is it £150 worse than the 4S? Are the 4Ss £70 better than the CSC6? I've read reviews and have ended up more confused than when I started. Apparently the Pilot Sport 4 is worse than the CSC6... hence the PS4S? They're all brands that know their stuff when it comes to tyres... so will it make any more difference than a bigger hole in my wallet?

It'd really appreciate it if someone could just breakdown my three options (or suggest another) and tell me what to buy :p I've spent the entire evening at my PC and have had enough...

Current rears are at 2mm so need replacing soonish. Fronts still have ~5mm, but if I'm going to change to non-RFT I'll just buy them all now and maybe try and flog my part worn fronts.

Thanks for any help.

Pilot sport 4S will probably last longer than the Goodyear’s.

Both good tyres though and will be much better in cold than the RE050A.
