This week has been a disaster for those of us who live in the North West.

First we have the headlines that a man who stabbed and killed another person has walked free from court as "he was acting in self defence" when cutting someone's throat in an altercation on a night out.

Then we have have a PCSO being lured into a park at night to help an injured person and being ambushed and slashed across the hands as he protected his face.

Last night an OAP has been stabbed in the stomach and his fighting for his life.

Finally last week a girl leaving university was stabbed in the stomach as she fought to keep her bag with all her coursework in from being stolen by a thug.

I'm just depressed at the situation and with the scum bag walking free from court it has given the green light to local hoodlums to stick a blade into people at every opportunity.

It appears the law sees it like this: I attempt to rob you, you fight back, I stab you in self defence.

What a travesty!

Your last paragraph seems a bit of a leap, and isn’t really borne out by anything preceding it.

If we had more than three policemen in the country, they might be able to do something about this sort of thing.

I appreciate that. It's just my frustration at the spate of stabbings we have seen recently. All the radio stations and local TV channels are bleating on about cracking down on knives and we see nothing being done about it.

It's getting to the point that going out after dark is playing russian roulette with your life. God help you if you work shifts and have to commute through these crime infested areas.

Political correctness mixed with a lack of money determines some of it I think. Costly to jail people and employ more police. Slaves to money.

So long as these criminals are only affecting us proles and aren't infesting the lovely communities that these politicians inhabit then nothing will change.

Personally I'd make room in prisons for proper sentencing by putting all of the paedophiles, murderers and rapists on a rope.

Yup, get used to it, violent crime is on the rise, (as the stats show) too many scumbags breeding in the 90s and 00s.... this is the result.

I don't go out drinking in town anymore. They let any kind of yobs into the bars wearing their tracksuits and a couple of occasions I've had altercations with them. Some for some sort of perceived look, some for spilling an imaginary drink.

I carry myself well, I can hold my own in a scrap but I'm not stab proof. It's just not worth going out into town and I'm not the only person who feels that way. Town centre bars are dying because of drugs and violence but all of the local pubs are making a come back and I guess that's a good thing.

It's all from a lack of discipline in children at home and at school, bad parents breed bad children. Then when they grow up there is a lack of consequence for their actions. They get emboldened in their crimes. A bit of graffiti or vandalism soon evolves into drug dealing and violent crime.

just put up massive posters and billboards that say "if you carry a weapon, it means you've got a little willy!" :D

That's a leap and a half.

Doesn’t “self-defence” have to be proportionate / reasonable in the eyes of another to be allowed under the law? For example, you confront a burglar at your home, he runs off but you chase him down the street and beat his brains out with a quarter staff is not reasonable.

So what were the full circumstances of the first case the OP mentions?

Well in London they throw acid in your face so consider yourself lucky! I'd rather be stabbed.
The situation is only going to get much, much worse.

Who would have thought that cutting frontline services would lead to an increase in crime? Shocking!

Well growing up in a small rural town myself I hardly knew crime existed till I went to uni(not that i saw anything in particular). So after a quick look at the London murder rates, they have significantly dropped since the 90's. Maybe other violent crimes have increased?

So what do the stats say, and what's the opinion of people who grew up in the city in the 80' s and 90's?

I lived in Elephant & Castle for a few years, right next to the Haygate estate before it was demolished, and I can tell you that it's a very bad place for knife crime (or at least it was when I was there, 2012 - 2015) I remember walking past 3 different pools of blood with police tape around them, (one in the old shopping centre and one in the tube station, forgot where the other was)

The two biggest things I noticed were the amount of single mothers struggling to cope with multiple unruly boys, with no discipline or any effective role model, or good example to follow, they seem to quickly get sucked into worse problems, and become part of the Police > Jail > Police > Jail > Police > Jail, circle of failure.

The other thing I noticed was the distinct lack of effective police resource, they were very quick to dish out harsh sentences for knife crime - which is easy, what they failed to do was anything that effectively addressed the root cause, most kids in the area carried knives because their mates carried them, because the opposing gang carried them, the people at a higher ministerial level within the police force, seemed totally bereft of any ideas whatsoever. My only conclusion is that the police were systematically dismantled and chastised by Thersea May when she was home secretary, and I think many of the problems in London with knife crime, acid attacks, etc - are the chickens coming home to roost, based on her policies.

When the police force have been so badly dismantled, they go from being an effective community resource, to a service that just rushes from one job to the next with blue flashing lights, throwing people in jail, apart from that - there's hardly ever a visible police presence anywhere, "bobbies on the beat" actually patrolling the streets, talking to people, forming community relationships, no time for any of that anymore.

A third problem now, is that now the police are in such a sorry state, they have no way to generate ideas or engineer new ways of solving problems, because like the NHS the whole system is running at 100% 24/7. The only thing left to do - is have people at the higher ministerial level massaging figures and statistics to make it look like crime is going down, or things are getting better - so they get to keep their jobs.

2 muggings over the space of 10 years. fought back and got sliced twice on right thigh, left me with a nasty scar during the first. 3-4"'s long and about a cm deep.

Second one was 2 guys vs me as they wanted my xmas presents, fought back, ended up with bruised kidneys after being kicked in the back and a 2 inch wife and 1inch deep scar on left side of stomach. another group of blokes shouted at them and they ran off without the presents. A&E doctor told me that it was a good job I was fat otherwise it could have done some real damage :D cheeky ****!

Doesn't really hurt being stabbed or sliced, its more the shock of it happening. Couldn't imagine being burnt with acid :( potential to loose your sight as well in some cases.

I remember back when I was a child, we all used to carry a knife of some description, even at school, and I can't remember anyone ever getting stabbed. In fact, I can quite clearly remember Mr Dodd, my Form and French teacher, asking the class if anyone had a knife handy so he could shave down his desk.
