Coal power stations actually produce better quality electricity than gas or renewables. Indeed the quality of electricity from renewables is lower than fossil or nuclear by a significant margin. The knock on effect of this is that electrical goods do not last as long as they used to. Case in point is that you could expect a fridge or toaster from the 50s to last a minimum of 10 years with a average life of 22.78 years. Now the minimum is about 2 years with an average of 6.89 years. When you factor in the lower life expectancy of electrical goods and the pollution required to make the replacements you will find renewables to be significantly more polluting than coal.

What the heck are you talking about?

The main reason electrical goods don't tend to last as long as they used to is a combination of cost cutting (lower quality materials/parts), and more features to go wrong in such a way that it's more expensive to repair than replace (or large parts of the device being glued together in such a way you have to seriously damage the casing to open it).
Not to mention an element of "must update to get the new shiny" on a lot of smaller items (phones especially).

Have you ever measured the quality of your electricity recently? Thought not, much like almost everyone. I purchased a qizmo from ebay which was a real eye opener... Apparently my electricity is borderline 'not electrcity' and almost turning in to plasma. I realise that there is a degree of self irony here in using a electrical device to tell me that my electricity is destroying my consumer goods! I fully expect it to break in a few months but for the time being it has been a real eye opener.

If you dont believe me I have data. I plotted a graph of electricity quality against time during a 24 hour cycle and the quality goes down when most of the grid is being powered by renewables. Indeed on a sunny day when photovoltaics are holding up the grid I would advise unplugging all your appliances. Even if they are on standby they are still being poisoned.

People will laugh but I have data and they just have opinions

Planned obsolescence/planned failure is a big thing these days. Engineer a small (non-replaceable, non-repairable) part of your device to fail in 2 years. They all do it. Also ensure your device cannot be repaired to the max extent possible.

Example: washing machines. They have all these days switched to sealed bearings, so that if a .5p bearing fails, you have to buy a new £300 washing machine. Before, you would simply replace the .5p bearing.

Turning into plasma? Not electricity? Do you want to explain in a bit more detail what you're talking about?

I'm not making any sense of that. Electricity turning into plasma? Either I am even more ignorant about plasma than I thought or that's just plain wrong.

What is quality in the context of electricity, anyway? I would interpret it as sustained compliance with expected parameters such as voltage, frequency (for AC), etc. Not how close electricity is to becoming "not electricity".

Erm yeah....

So what you are saying is that either the electric charge (force) itself has somehow changed as a force in a bad way or the charge carrier has somehow changed and is somehow bad for the materials it flow through? then you link this with renewables as if the charge generated is somehow different to other forms of generation. I might take it a bit more seriously if somehow solar panels were producing a charge carrier different to normal but photons are their own antiparticle and you are still producing power through the actions of electrons.

The general "quality" of AC doesn't matter too much in the vast majority of electronic devices today that rectify to DC and have a smoothing capacitor as long as there isn't too much voltage variation (personally I'm a fan of having some regulation after that stage but often it is absent to save money).

The problem with forums is that context doesn’t come across very well, people are treating this seriously when it’s clearly a parody :)
