Google Home

Do others agree with me that when it comes time to buy a new major appliance such as a washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, robo vacuum cleaner, etc, I will be looking for direct GH support as a pre-condition? I no longer want it to function indirectly through another service like IFTTT.

It seems Google is already working closely with Samsung on their appliances so if my choice is limited to Samsung, I will likely opt for their integrated machines. But LG and (at least in the US), GE seems close behind.

Also check on the development of Scenes for lighting.

Has anyone managed to get their GH sending audio to their Clowncast Audio successfully? Recently purchased an Audio but am struggling here as the GH is set to send music sources to the Audio (hooked into my amp) but I get no sound at all. Trying to troubleshoot this but am just getting put off.

I don't see why it would need to know who set the alarm is all :)

not having a google home/mini, i assume the user was hoping if he sets an alarm for 8.30 for himself, this will also set an alarm on his mobile, so his mobile will go off only and not his partners, and when she sets an alarm for a later time, this wont go off on his mobile. could be wrong but that was my assumption.

I don't think it can send the alarm to your phone though can it? Unless that's a feature I've missed, I thought it just set it on the google home itself.

No, almost certainly it can't. It annoys me enough that if I set an alarm on my kitchen Mini, it wont tell me on my GH in the bedroom when it's due... but I can understand why that could get complicated. Sending the alarm to a group would likely be the easiest solution.

the annoying thing is that google@home (i think it was called) was announced i think in 2014 at google I/O. it was then never mentioned again. It was supposed to be home automation. They should have set a standard then for devices to be able to communicate so everyone was using some free android os. i blame google for the slow uptake given they have the ability to make it so.

Well, it would appear my Google home is now behaving better. This maybe a combination of expecting too much too soon regarding my music uploads, the unit "settling" in, and me finally getting some sleep after a rough few days with a poorly toddler !!

Countcussy

Are any of the music related issues your having anything to do with the issues being experienced in this thread (it started off as an issue with the Pixel, but is now looking Google wide on chromecast and Home also)?

https://productforums.google.com/fo...ooter#!msg/websearch/kFCECV935SU/xNDNm8VUBQAJ

Im unable to use Google Assistant to play my Google Play music library (of songs that I have uploaded (no subscription), and it now says not available or it will try to play via youtube.

I'm getting a Google Home for Christmas, but really only want it to be able to play my uploaded tunes. If I cant access them I wont bother.

Hmm, I don't think so. One of the annoying things to begin with, was that I have 2 phones (Nexus 5x) and 2 tablets, (Nexus 7, 2013 & Lenovo Tab4 Plus). All would play the music I requested via a voice command.
It was only the HOME that was having the issue. Not available in your area being a common response. It seems to have settled down now and songs that would not play, now play fine.
After initially trying a small sample, I uploaded 8000 songs over the weekend from my personal library. Family are instructed to make a note of anything that refuses to play, to see if I can find a common denominator.
I am convinced its a server side issue.

So, my HOME unit decided it was not going to play some music last night. Started a chat with Google this morning. Have placed it in spoiler tags as its quite lengthy.

Rona

Hi, am I chatting with Mark?

Mark
8:39 AM
Yes, Good morning Rona. Getting a little frustrated with my new Google home.

Rona
8:40 AM
Good morning Mark! Sorry to hear about your frustrations. How can I help you, sir?

Mark
8:41 AM
I have uploaded my personal music collection and sometimes, it works flawlessly. At other times, songs say they are not available in my area. But its not consistent and can change.

Rona
8:41 AM
I understand. Let me help you with this concern right away. May I know which country you are located in?

Mark
8:41 AM
UK

Rona
8:42 AM
Thank you!

Rona
8:42 AM
Where have you uploaded your music?

Mark
8:42 AM
To the Google Play using music manager.

Mark
8:43 AM
Also, If I ask my phones or tablets to play the troublesome songs, they play fine.

Rona
8:43 AM
I see. Are you using Google Home Mini or Regular? Also, what device do you have the Google Home app on? Android or Iphone?

Mark
8:44 AM
Regular Home. App is on Nexus 5x. Android

Rona
8:45 AM
Thanks. What kind of subscription do you have in the Google Play Music? Is it a Premium subscription or just he regular one?

Mark
8:46 AM
I have no paid subscription. My understanding is that I can upload a certain amount of songs for free. And as I say, It works fine on all except the home.

Rona
8:47 AM
That is correct Mark. However this particular feature on Google Home is available only in US and in Canada. For customers in UK, Google Home works best on paid Google Play Music subscriptions.

Rona
8:47 AM
I understand it works sometimes but due to the limitation, we are unable to guarantee that it works all the time on the Google Home device.

Mark
8:48 AM
What limitation is this and please point me towards more info.

Rona
8:49 AM
One moment please. Let me get that for you.

Mark
8:49 AM
If that is the case, I will return the Google home and get the Amazon Echo.

Rona
8:50 AM
One moment, I might be looking only at the free radio services which is available in US and Canada. Let me just verify the uploaded songs.

Rona
8:51 AM
Mark, can you tell me how you command Google Home to play a song from your playlist?

Mark
8:51 AM
Hey Google, Song title, artist.

Rona
8:52 AM
Thank you. What is the error message from Google Home?

Mark
8:53 AM
Error is "Sorry {song title} is not available in your area.

Mark
8:53 AM
Also, If I ask it to play Uptown Funk, it says not available in your area. If I ask it to play Mark Ronson, Uptown Funk is the first track that plays.

Rona
8:54 AM
For regular subscriptions, Google Home will not be able to play a particular song or artist you are requesting. You may, however, ask to play your playlist. Say, ""Hey Google. Play <named playlist>""

Mark
8:55 AM
I am sorry, but I am not sure you are correct.

Mark
8:55 AM
Again, please point me to where this is documented.

Thank you for the link Mark, however, we don't have update yet as to when this feature is rolled out to customers in UK

Mark
9:00 AM
OK Rona

Mark
9:01 AM
I`m not getting anywhere with this. I will leave it for now and return the unit. It simply does not do what is advertised for UK users. What a shame.

Rona
9:01 AM
You may still play your playlist though. But the limitation is on the particular song or artist.

Mark
9:02 AM
So why does it work on phones and tablets?

Rona
9:04 AM
It is different from the supported features and functionalities available on Google Home device in each country, sir.

Rona

For UK, here are the supported features for Music services (voice supported):

GPM Subscription
Spotify Free
Spotify Premium
TuneIn
BBC

Rona

If you can cast from your phone to the Google Home, it would also work that way

Rona
9:06 AM
But for voice commands, you would be needing the subscription

Mark
9:07 AM
OK, None of this makes sense. So If I understand correctly, if I ASK my phone to play a song, using my VOICE, it works, but the HOME unit does not. Is that by design?

Rona
9:08 AM
Your phone is playing the songs directly from your device. Not from the Google Play Music. That is why Google Home is unable to do it even though you uploaded it to your Google Play Music.

Mark
9:09 AM
No Its NOT. There is no music on my device. Its playing it from My Google Play Music Library.

Rona

Mark

We are going round in circles. I Have to start work now. I will explore other options.

Disappointed. One of the reasons I bought the Home/Mini was so that we could play our own uploaded albums. I mean it's not a huge dealbreaker as I/we can cast them, but that's not the point of having all this voice assistant stuff in the house is it?

My wife has enjoyed having the Home/Mini in the house a lot more in the few days it's been set up than we ever did when we used the Echo. That and she got herself a free 4 month trial to GPM via their Cyber Monday deal. So we're going to stick with it I guess and I just hope they rectify this issue.

I think Disappointed is a good word.
Its amazing that the HOME cant read Google's own calendar client properly. The ECHO performs this task flawlessly.
I am aware that the device is still evolving, but this is basic stuff really. Glad I got it on offer.

Scratching my head a bit... I can play individual tracks from an album I know isn't available to buy, and which I uploaded about 2 years back to my cloud library, but it stubbornly refuses to play the containing album by name, as you've demonstrated!

For reference, the album is Rebuild The Wall by Luther Wright and The Wrongs (better than the original, too).

Not tried with owt else yet, but evidence so far suggests the same result.

Typical Google imo. I expected flaky stuff like this and still bought the home over Echo, when I knew that would be better in certain situations. I am the only one with a GH out of my few friends that have Echo's and theirs are all flawless with music playback. Mine is so inconsistent that I don't use the feature that much anymore (playback from G.Music library).

Going off on a different subject, does anyone find that the female GH assistance voice sometimes switches to an American accent with certain requests?

I think one of the most disappointing things there is the poor understanding from their support agent. I'm sure they must be getting the question a lot.

I'm okay as I have a subscription anyway, but it's crazy that it doesn't work for your uploaded songs on home when it does on your phone.

Same with mine, but for whatever reason, we just didn't get along with the Echo. Hardly ever recognized my wife's voice (although she is from Essex so understandable lol) and the design isn't that appealing. Whereas with the Home, it answers us straight away and looks like it belongs in the front room and blends in a lot more. Same applies with the Dot/Mini in our bedroom. Didn't even notice the thing was installed until I told her.

Do you have a Pixel phone?

I just had a web chat with Google support with regards to using the google home with voice commands to access music, and they stated you cant do it (in the UK), without a subscription.

This is much like the issue I am experiencing with my Pixel phone (accessing music via the assistant) and can only assume google have changed their access and subscription policies recently.
