Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hey guys, my bills are horribly expensive now and getting unaffordable. £41 now for just internet, I don't have any packages, no landline or virgin tv. It's been increasing quite regularly and quite fast and doesn't seem that long ago when it was still around £25. I don't see them stopping and I've no doubt they'll increase it again soon. It's all very well they keep telling me how fast my internet is getting which is about 170mb/s but it would be fast enough for me even if they reduced it. I don't need any more speed.

A year or two ago I threatened them that I'd leave and I got a call from a very nice woman who reduced it considerably for quite a few months before it went back up. Do you think I should cal them again and threaten to leave?

Yes

Got a question for you lot, I have my SH1 in modem mode and use an Asus n66u router, Ive got myself a new router to replace the n66u, Im just wondering if I need to do a reset of the superhub when changing routers?

Obviously its in modem mode so hoping I don't need to otherwise I will have to go back and forth switching back to modem mode again if I reset the hub.

Thank's

This is starting to take the peanuts now...I cant game at all and was wondering why...

My SH3 is awful.
The ethernet performance is great but the WiFi is abysmal. There are times when it's so slow, even though the SH2 was much better.

I've decided to put that into modem mode and then buy a router instead.

Any recommendations for a decent router? The WiFi is only used for phones/tablets/Chromecasts but it still needs to be better than the SH3, anything with 4 Gigabit ports would be nice

How about keeping it as a router, using the ports for existing wired kit and buying a proper Access Point, such as a Ubiquiti Access Point. Will be far better than all in one solutions.

So I have resorted to a 3 device solution!

VM Superhub 3 - modem mode
Asus N66U - router mode with wifi switched off
BT smart hub - wireless AP mode

This means I am getting excellent wired performance (from the ASUS) and wifi is hitting 300 mbps upstairs thanks to the 802.11ac on the smart hub!

Depends on your budget, I had an Asus N66U that Ive had for years, I just got myself a new Asus AC86U to replace it.

I'm not too familiar with these, how do they work? Are they like the HomePlugs were they go through the electricity?
If I've got my router in my office upstairs and I want this in the living room downstairs what connections do I need to utilise?

Budget will be £200 all in all, I've got £90 worth of Amazon vouchers which will be used to fund part of the £200

You cable them up using cat 5/6 and they act as your wireless access point. Your VM router still does the routing. As you don't have PoE on your VM Super Hub you need to use the supplied injector.

Your wireless devices access the Access Point and it will send the traffic over the cable to your router.

You'll most likely find that if you put the Access Point upstairs it'll be more than adequate for providing wifi downstairs.

The 86U is around £200+ , the Netgear R7800 gets good ratings as well which is a bit cheaper, but I much prefer the UI and firmware support on the Asus routers.

I've got an ethernet port in my living room so I could use that if needed actually.

I am using a ubiquiti UniFi AP and I have to say it is the single best piece quipment I have bought. I have a pretty big 4 bedroom house and the range has been exceptional. Router/SH3 is downstairs with WiFi turned off. I have the AP upstairs and it provides fantastic WiFi around the house and outside in the garden too. Never had any WiFi dropouts since.
