Australian police have arrested two people after a car drove into a crowd in Melbourne.

The car "collided with a number of pedestrians" on Flinders Street, a busy junction in the centre of the city, said Victoria Police.

Fourteen people have been injured, with several in a critical condition.

Police have said it was a deliberate act but said it was too early to say whether it was terrorist-related.

The driver and another man have been detained.

"The motivations are unknown," police commander Russell Barrett said.

Details from ABC News:

The injured include a preschool-aged child with a head injury, who was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital in a serious condition.

The owner of a bakery on Flinders Street, identified as Jim, said the intersection was "full of pedestrians" when the car drove through it.

"He came to rest just next to the tram stop — maybe the side of the tram stop stopped him — but the only thing that seemed to be slowing him down was the amount of pedestrians he had hit.

"All you could hear was just 'bang bang bang bang bang'."

The driver behind a car attack outside Melbourne's Flinders Street Station that left 14 people injured was a mentally ill drug addict, it has been reported.

Police are not treating the incident as terrorism but rather the work of a man with a history of addiction to ice.

No evidence of connection to terrorism: police
Police say there is no evidence to indicate there is a connection with terrorism. However, they will continue to work with the Counter-terrorism Command to ensure there is no connection and ongoing threat.

This is what police have said about the driver:
He is a 32-year-old Australian citizen of Afghan descent
He was known to Victoria Police
He was not currently on bail or under any corrections orders
He has a history of drug use and mental health issues

So should this start a discussion about drug abuse and mental health in Melbourne, Australia? Or aren't we bothered now they aren't Muslim terrorists?

Where's an Oz Duterte when he's needed....?

And what the hell is ice, and how has this addict got a driving licence?

Oh and appearance wise he meets your criteria, and he's of Afghan decent. It may not be as clear cut as they say. There are hundreds if not thousands of druggies around in Melbourne, how many deliberately mow down pedestrians?

And what the hell is ice

I keep forgetting you live in the 1950s.

4-Methylaminorex (4-MAR, 4-MAX) is a stimulant drug of the 2-amino-5-aryloxazoline class that was first synthesized in 1960 by McNeil Laboratories. It is also known by its street names "U4Euh" ("Euphoria") and "Ice". It is banned in many countries as a stimulant.

4-Methylaminorex has effects comparable to methamphetamine but with a longer duration. The results of animal experiments conducted with this drug suggest that it has an abuse liability similar to cocaine and amphetamine.

...It produces long-lasting effects, generally up to 16 hours in duration if taken orally and up to 12 hours if smoked or insufflated. Large doses have been reported anecdotally to last up to 36 hours. The effects are stimulant in nature, producing euphoria, an increase in attention, and increased cognition.

It's a Class A drug in the UK (Schedule 9 in Australia).

and how has this addict got a driving licence?

Easy enough to get a driver's licence before you're addicted.

So you got an Afghan plowing through pedestrians while his friend sits and films the thing with a load of knives on him, and it isn't terrorist related? It never is until it's confirmed as undeniable fact, just use your melons for god's sake. Muslim apologists are as bad as the terrorists.

The other guy was not in the car. Police have said they have not established any connection between the two men, nor do we know if either of them are Muslim.

Police statement:

[He] was observed filming with his mobile phone … He was searched, routine policing.

He had in a bag three knives, and he was taken into custody to determine whether he was in fact connected with the incident.

At this stage we do not believe that to be the case. He is still being interviewed in relation to the matter.

Australia are usually one of the first countries to ban psychoactive drugs/substances compared to other first world countries, January 1st brings another long list of substances they're putting an end to trading legally. As we all know though it doesn't really stop the use of them, rather just increases the price of obtaining it which can lead to further struggles with finances and mental health.

The easiest thing to do is not class it at terrorism.

Nor did I say you had - no need to be defensive, let's try and stay on topic though.
Okay. I'll stay right on topic. This guy was high as a kite. I've already said that Australia is notorious for it's drink and drug problems. Something that a lot of Western countries have but in Australia there are some unique instances with quite hard drugs being used.

As soon as some sort of event like this happens it is popular to attack Islam. I'm pretty sure that heavy drink and drug use it not a problem in Islamic communities.

My point is that there is an irony here. This man would likely not have committed his offence had he been a Muslim.
