MSI 390 Thermal Paste causing Heat Issues. Replaced

Joop,

My 290x @ 1264/1354 idles at 36c (watercooled though, but even on stock aircooled i've found as far as i can remember, better temps removing stock goop and redoing using paste/s of my choice)

If your gaming temps seem high to you, well, what ya got to lose ?

Just take your time, and never try brute force as you may of forgotten a screw/bolt etc

I say go for it :)

Looking at getting the RX 480 when release but will avoid MSI.

Will do it tonight and see what results i get fed up having the fan at 70% all the time.

Is there an MSI rep on the boards? it would be interesting to hear how the tim is applied in the manufacturing process, it obviously could do with a bit of refinement.

The main thing to note here though is that by sorting it yourself, according to Rensin's reply, you wont invalidate your warranty :)

I have the Nitro version of the 390 as well and i havent seen it go over 74C and thats in the dvision. Normally it sits about 60C on other games

Here's the email guys confirming the warranty.

Hey guys,

Anyone else had their VRM 1 hitting 85-87C during a game like Tomb Raider or the Witcher 3?. My fan speed is generally 35 percent at 77-79c on the core during those games.

It's OCed to 1100mhz on the core, have not touched power limit or volts either. It just seems a bit high tbh

Has anyone posted the MSI video "how to apply thermal paste" yet?

It's awful and explains a lot.

Oh my God. That truly is the stuff of nightmares.

Apparently the PS4 suffers from poorly applied thermal paste (and cheap stuff that dries out) which would explain why mine sounds like a hairdryer. I think I might crack mine open and put some AS5 on there.

I've a gigabyte 390 that I'd like to replace the paste. Any decent clips how to remove the fan section?

Just remove the screws on the bottom, dont forget the fan connector and some cards have screws through the I/O sheild.

Maybe look at some videos for fitting waterblocks and just watch the removal part. but its very very simple.

Note than you probably technically should replace the thermal pads on the VRMs and to a lesser extent the VRAM.

Lmao at that video. No wonder my card was so bad!

Seriously though, we need a perma thread in these forums naming and shaming manufacturers who aren't doing it properly and ask your review sites to start checking this as it's the only way things are going to change.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I actually don't mind replacing the paste (if temps are a problem) so I can personally make sure the application is good. The more important issue for me is that some manufacturers do not allow this and enforce a warranty void policy on it. It betrays a lack of understanding for the customers who don't want to go through the inconvenience of RMA'ing a card with a simple thermal paste issue that the customer can easily fix themself.

The video is hilarious though.

OK just to add a little extra find to my original post. My 980ti has always run warm. i could not get it to pass the firestrike stress test usually aroun 80% with too much fluctuation in frame rates. it would throttle at 83c and in games always get to 83c. So today i took apart my EVGA 980ti to find this.... as you can see some parts of the chip have not TIM. I replaced with the same IC diamond as the original post (same tube from a couple of years back) and wow. now passed with 98.8% and temp maxed out at 77c with fans on 50% usually 80's/90's. getting more frames in game and more to the point rock solid frames. Plus a quieter GPU. so really does seem that a Repaste on your GPU could be free extra FPS.

oh and idle temps gone from 47c to around 35c

A word of warning is that MSI do not support warranty returns if you have replaced the thermal paste

Really takes the P1%5 that they get funny over people correcting a fault they have created. If my card is throttling due to heat why should i have to go through the pain of an RMA? if this is a card manufacturers policy i simply wont buy a card from them. I tend to stick to EVGA these days.

Yes and Yes.
An RMA is the correct response if you have an MSI card that is overheating.
