Things you've noticed as you're getting older?

Today I have learned that even though 35 year old me can still rock out a dancefloor for 4 hours (Trance Sanctuary NYD was amazeballs), my body certainly pays the price afterwards.

Abs, back muscles, and left knee are all sore now, haha.

Feels a bit odd contributing to one of these threads at 32 but here goes:

  • My view of what age range should be considered young and what range should be considered old has evolved (hence it being weird to post here when I'm (only) 32)
  • I find a lot more women attractive, less caught up on a narrow range of physical attributes and more likely to be drawn to a wider range of different women.
  • Knee pain, right bugger
  • Back will trip out every now and then
  • Hang overs are worse and come with a couple of days worth of what I can only describe as mild depression (doing dry January, might extend it for the year)
  • Starting to look forward to responsibility (thinking seriously about kids)
  • Tired all the bloody time
  • Started to feel guilty about less productive hobbies (gaming)
  • More willing to try new things and not worry about the consequences
  • Constantly and consistently fretting over money
  • Can't remember the last time I got 8 hours sleep in a sitting

  • I find a lot more women attractive, less caught up on a narrow range of physical attributes and more likely to be drawn to a wider range of different women.

Weirdly I have noticed this too, I was kinda shallow in my 20s (though being slender myself probably played a part)

all the time...I'm 36 and find myself doing that. Or thinking 'she looks alright for her age' when she's actually my age. Silly brain

Ha, same.

The brain does a weird sort of age perception filter on certain people such as yourself and others you see all the time. Its like looking at your parents / brothers / sisters in old photos and you suddenly realise how much they have changed but day to day you don't really notice it.

One thing I've noticed over the years is just how many people are blagging it, be it at work or personal life they've built a facade but underneath it they are still terrified and don't have a clue what they doing, just hoping no-one else will notice. Luckily most people are the same and we're all so wrapped up in ourselves that we don't see it in others.

I don't know why but I think wife is trying to annoy me all the time. - She never used to. Probably because I am so laid back and joyful all the time she can't stand it.

  • Noticed how much I appreciate a quiet Sunday morning lately - Hell, yes ... Sunday was the dullest, most pointless day of the week when I was younger. Now it's precious as one more day before returning to work
  • Started having to trim my nose hair - Yes definitely, although I tend to wait until one is irritating a nostril and then yank the thing out. Eyebrows need trimming when I have a hair cut now, along with random hair on my ears
  • Have no idea who any celebrities from the last 5 or so years are - Agreed ... can't stand the likes of TOWIE, MIC etc. so they're nobodies in my eyes
  • Most of my cultural references are from the 90s and early 2000s - Most of mine are from the 80s when I was a teenager, certainly in the case of music and films
  • Back hurts pretty much every day now - Yep, was drunk on holiday about 14 years ago, slipped on a wet step and fell backwards, hitting the small of my back on the edge of one of the steps behind me. Gives me jip every winter and if I have a restless night's sleep until I get out of bed and start moving around
  • Started listening to Queen unironically - Doesn't really apply to me ... as a fan of 80s music, I always liked Queen anyway
  • Can get by with much less sleep - Nope, definitely not ... my ability to 'burn the midnight oil' has never been lower, although I hate going to bed if I'm not tired
  • The internet is getting more and more boring - Yes, but I couldn't imagine life without it ... and I'm like a sulky child if the broadband goes down at home
  • Hardly ever feel like watching TV anymore - Yes, definitely ... so much dross on nowadays, see celebs above
  • Zero interest in video games - Have been a gamer since my teenage years and I have to confess, it's starting to wear a little thin ... might just be decreased attention span on my part
  • Increased interest in gardening - Nope, definitely not!
  • Sometimes I think about buying a boat - Been there, done that ... wife and I bought one a couple of weeks after our honeymoon. Turned into a bit of a money pit once the boating equivalent of the MOT test came in, so we knocked it on the head
  • Increased interest in radio 4 - Used to listen to it a lot a couple of years ago, until I realised it was shameless BBC lefty propaganda
  • Got my first divorce under my belt - Not yet, but it will happen at some point in the next 18 months
  • Started to prefer red wine instead of beer. And one glass is enough. - Have always liked both, but sway more towards beer. My New Year's resolution is to stop drinking at home on weekdays ... had been having a bottle of beer every night throughout Nov/Dec, not good for the waistline and liver
  • Less interest in weight training and more interest in cycling and endurance - See beer/wine above ... want to do both! Will start running again soon and join a gym once my living arrangements are settled (see divorce above)
  • Don't feel the need to try and impress anyone, happy to be plain and invisible - I don't know about impressing anyone as such, but I do take great amusement in doing stuff that people don't expect of me being the age I am ... I don't think I dress like a 48-year-old and I have a worrying obsession with tattoos at the moment
  • Feel like I have women figured out quite well - Christ, no ... oddest, most irrational species on the planet. Nothing is either black or white, it's a shade of grey. Anything you did or said up to 15 years ago can and will be used against you when it suits
  • Seem to be more tolerant of others. "That's nice dear." - Nope, definitely getting more cantankerous as I get older, certainly less patience
  • Catch myself imagining what kind of grand dad I'll be - Having no kids of my own, it won't ever happen to me, unless I end up marrying a woman with her own children and effectively become one by proxy
In general, it's the health-related aspects that worry me the most - I had a 'senior moment' in Tescos car park over the Christmas holiday and completely forgot where I'd parked the car. Had never happened before or since. Most people say I look anything up to ten years younger than I actually am (certainly not complaining about that), but to me I have an alarming amount of crow's feet around my eyes and stuff like that. There's an increasing amount of grey hair on my temples and the odd one or two amongst my chest hair and pubes.

EDIT: A couple of obvious ones I can't believe I forgot first time 'round:
  • Years of screen use gaming and at work has knackered my eyesight - optician said my eyes are shaped like rugby balls, so have had glasses for the last 18 months
  • Tendon or ligament damage in my right arm - as above thanks to gaming and work, due to excessive mouse use/bad posture when sat at a computer
Real 'first-world' problems in the grand scheme of things, but they bug me nonetheless :D

  • Noticed how much I appreciate a quiet Sunday morning lately. - not really. Still busy so don't really get the time.
  • Started having to trim my nose hair. - oh yes. That and ear hair. It migrates from the head to other parts of the body.
  • Have no idea who any celebrities from the last 5 or so years are. - 10 years more like.
  • Most of my cultural references are from the 90s and early 2000s. - not really. 80's more like it.
  • Back hurts pretty much every day now. - does if I don't take care of it (comfortable chair, etc) - spent xmas sleeping in someone else's mattress was like sleeping on a park bench - got more and more painful day by day.
  • Started listening to Queen unironically. - never did
  • Can get by with much less sleep. - no, not really. Still need my Zzz's.
  • The internet is getting more and more boring. - probably.
  • Hardly ever feel like watching TV anymore. - yes and no. Seem to spend more time scanning channels for something worth watching.
  • Zero interest in video games. - not as much as I used to be, can't play anything fast 'n' furious anymore brain can't keep up anymore.
  • Increased interest in gardening. - nope! Actually much less interest than I used to I'd rather stay in the warm these days.
  • Get a bit excited about my yearly blood lipids test results. - nope.
  • Sometimes I think about buying a boat. - I've never thought about it.
  • Increased interest in radio 4. - nay! Always been interested in Gardeners World. Go me.
  • Got my first divorce under my belt. - no.
  • Started to prefer red wine instead of beer. And one glass is enough. - nope. Never liked red always preferred white.
  • Less interest in weight training and more interest in cycling and endurance. - never had much interest in either honestly.
  • Don't feel the need to try and impress anyone, happy to be plain and invisible. - don't think anythings changed there.
  • Feel like I have women figured out quite well. - never in a million years.
  • Seem to be more tolerant of others. "That's nice dear." - no! Definitely more cantankerous/grouchy.
  • Catch myself imagining what kind of grand dad I'll be - no kids so won't be any grandkids.
Can't read small print anymore without glasses being perched on the end of my nose and/or holding it about 3 feet away. Yes I've had eye tests.

Find I've less interest in tech anymore - once upon a time I had to have the latest gadget. Now I'm not really bothered and shock! I don't have a smartphone and I'm not even on Facebook. I think that officially makes me an Older Person.

One thing I really noticed now am older is that sometimes i wish that I had my own children and Christmas time rubs that feeling in a fair bit harder....:(

I never wanted kids when I was younger...

I'm pretty sure this is everyone, at least I hope it is, otherwise I'm more neurotic than I suspected.

I think believing that everyone is highly neurotic can be a projection of your own failings at times (I've done this myself), there's so many professions, roles and even personal relationship examples where you simply can't just blag your way through it, you'll be found out very quickly. Besides neuroticism can be somewhat measured but it's more like a spectrum where AFAIK, they define the neuroticism scale so that 50% of people are above average, and 50% are below average, sort of like the IQ scale. So whilst the number could be huge it's certainly not most of the population.

Becoming more socialist as I get older and more successful.

Football bores the he'll out of me and I instantly judge any football fan as a football *****er

I think about food more than sex

CAMRA lovers are the same as football fans.

My back takes 1hr to work properly when I wake up

I snore really bad, although I deem this to be program of disinformation and distraction by the mrs.

These 2 *could* be related.
Me and the Mrs have both been moaning about a bad back for a while now and had put it down to our matress, however a little research suggests it could be pillows, so I removed a pillow from each of us and we have both woken up with much less pain, I also noticed that she doesn't snore as badly (although it has only been a few nights so far)
