YouTube star Logan Paul uploads a monetised video of a suicide victim to "raise awareness"

What does raising awareness even mean? I don't think there are any problems relating to lack of awareness at all, not for suicide and i doubt for many cases of various raising awareness issues. Rather i find that it is just a demonstration of people who would like to spread their "awareness" and fake high morality with a touch of condescension and to me, the highest level of ignorance.

it means different things depending on the problem, in this case people are aware that suicide is a problem, but many aren't necessarily aware as to just how widespread and prevalent it is and that there are things they can do to help

because suicide is a real issue that's a growing cause of death in young people, especially men, and raising awareness that this is becoming a serious epidemic that needs to be addressed by society as a whole is something that needs to be done.

however, filming some poor chaps corpse who's taken the quick way out of a pit of despair then chucking it on youtube to make some ad money is probably not the most tasteful or effective way of doing it.

No. All this public exposure nonsense simply normalises this sort of behaviour as if everyone's doing it.

You don't need a public awareness campaign to tell you whether someone you personally know enough to be able to even help them, is depressed or suicidal. The two are completely different things.

Exactly.

If someone knows someone who is suicidal, then they are aware lol. It's that simple. You don't need no silly awareness campaign to tell you if someone you know is suicidal, the two things are just completely unconnected.

Why on earth does suicide need to be advertised and plastered all over media, it's almost normalising it.

If that were true then "man up" wouldn't be the advice so many people going through mental health problems receive from people they know.

Its not that simple at all. People rarely know that someone is suicidal, otherwise there would be far less suicides as they could get them the help they needed.

I'm not indifferent on this - haven't watched the video, but it certainly sounds morally dubious and insensitive...

...but I'm sort of surprised it's 'news' in any way. Also, people and celebrities getting on the 'look at me, I am so morally awarrrreeee' train. Meh.

Similar thoughts here tbh.

This, as a news article, may educate parents more, on the type of material their children are watching.

Equally, some of the suicide increases are attributed to social media impact, so it is something google should be attentive too

This, I worked with a chap a few years ago, lovely ordinary bloke, new wife, 2 kids. He was having a bit of a tough time but nothing that you'd deem too serious, concerns about money, finding the 1st year of marriage harder than expected, bit of stress at work, he was very open and looked for advice reassurance like we all do. One Friday after work he came to the pub with a bunch of us like he would sometimes, we sat in the beer garden had a great time, he was a lot happier than he had been and seemed to be dealing with things a lot better. He ducked out early to walk his dogs and that was the last anybody saw of him until his wife found his body later that night.

Long story short raising awareness of suicide is a good thing, warning signs, support services, how to help people, there's no difference between that and a campaign like FAST for stroke awareness, it just feels less tangible.

Having said that, this isn't raising awareness, it doesn't seem to offer any useful information aside from "people commit suicide sometimes" which isn't a terribly informative and the addition of a pokemon hat and some giggling doesn't exactly scream sincerity.

yep, spot on, mental health in general seems to be getting left by the wayside, i can understand why the nhs can't afford to be putting out decent treatment in the face of budget issues but there's no reason a bit more understanding on a societal basis can't help.

of course defending the concept of raising awareness of these issues is not the same as defending how this guy thought he should go about it.

You really do have no idea what you're talking about.

Pretty good chance this guy is going to keep on getting into trouble. Got many deep issues with ego and image. Tall man's syndrome, can bet a lot goes back to his parents getting divorced and growing up in the sticks.

All you need to know...

Just watched the video. Think you have to be a special kind of stupid to upload that, with that title, etc...

Sorry if this has already been said, I may have missed it, but seeing snippets of the video (no shots of the body) am I the only person that thinks this whole thing is a fake, and that its been staged, and isn't in fact a dead body??

It doesn't make it any better at all and I think the whole thing is a utterly disgusting BUT surely not even Logan Paul wouldn't react the way he did in the video if it was a real human body???

Probably, but we will never know for sure so I struggle to care about it.

However, its crazy how obviously fake some of these videos are, yet they still get big hits and lots of support. It bends my mind to a point where I start to hate everything around me that is fake
