Teacher maternity leave...

Hi.

Quick question.

My wife an I were wondering how maternity leave works.

Say for example:
Baby due 26th July.
Summer holidays start when baby would be born.

Thus not actually contracted in work for the following 6 weeks.

When would the maternity leave start?

Is it...

On the birth date.

Or...

On the date that work would resume (September)

Teachers are only contracted 39 weeks per year and all pay is paid on a pro rata basis across the 12 months.

Btw those weeks are not spent doing nothing. Past 7 days I have been marking and planning...

I would've thought that the hashtag would give an indication that I am already slightly aware of the workloads teachers have ;)
 
You've planned this all wrong laddy.

As others say it'll start in the 'summer holidays'. You're still paid during them remember.

Should have lined it up for September!
 
Depends on the school as most are now academies and set their own pay and conditions - ours would start from September.

Mates daughter was born over Xmas and he is on his 2 weeks paternity now.
 
If you are taking a years mat leave you will either get the summer holiday before or after regardless (one would fall within mat leave). I'm fairly sure it's mandatory starting from birth for minimum of 2 weeks, but can be triggered by employer earlier if there is sufficient abscence from work due to pregnancy symptoms.
 
You have to wonder if this ‘teacher’ is intelligent enough to teach the next generation. Read the school’s maternity policy or get her to speak to her line manager/HR staff. Jesus H Christ.
 
Tell your wife she did it wrong, she's meant to wait until After or at the end of the summer hols, that way she gets more time off.

Loads of teachers plan their kids around leave

she is contracted to "work" in those 6 weeks as she will be receiving her salary. She just happens to not be in school at that time. If her pay stopped for those 6 weeks, you might have an argument, sorry chap.
 
Start mat leave in the last week of term before the summer holiday. Doesn't have to be on the day of birth and most women chose to start a couple of weeks before the due date as it's getting pretty uncomfortable by then. She is then paid as usual over the summer Simples.
 
For teachers its not about when mat leave starts its when you plan to come back. Mat leave starts on the day of birth at the latest as stated (you can go off earlier). The plan is to come back to work about 2-4 weeks BEFORE the summer holidays in the next year. At that point you wont be given much teaching if any (2-4 weeks left - Yr11 have left and you aren't suddenly going to get a load of teaching for other peoples classes). You do non-teaching planning and Scheme of Work style tasks for 2-4 weeks on full pay as you are back to work. Then get paid for 6weeks at full pay during the summer holidays.
Come sept of the next year you are on full timetable and back to work as normal.

Thanks all. Confirmed what I thought.

All will be fine. Unfortunately you can't really plan these things perfectly.

I'm actually happy it's just before summer holidays, will also both of us to be off and I can delay my paternal leave till Christmas.
