Landline Question

What about VOIP? Most people have WhatsApp etc which you can call people on, and is free. The voice quality is so much better than over the landline/mobile network too.

Hmm VoIP would be nice.

Needs to be able to do.
VoIP to UK landline and mobile unlimited and easy for elderly to be use MN

Why not use your mobile?

I love these people who are in a world of there own who think EVERYONE has a mobile phone - Well look around you - You might live where there is a wonderful signal and you are the dog goollies because you can have unlimited data - call - text - We mortals on the other hand don't get wonderful signals if we get a signal at all - SO guess what - we have a land line - When I was looking for trades men I discounted all those that only listed a mobile for the simple reason it cost me a fortune to call them.- So take the blinkers from your eyes and look at what rest of us have to deal with

I hear what you say DXP55 and I'm a few years younger than you but I reckon home landlines will be dead in 10 years time.
I never use my landline and the only person it is there for is my Mum, when she passes we will get rid of it.

Maplins do countdown timer relay kits, set it for 59 mins and p

Vonage Home is pretty good, you can use your existing phone too, not sure on packages for mobiles tho.

If you rely on your landline so much then why not use an all inclusive package that includes mobile numbers, also check with your mobile network to see if they can give you a home booster to improve your signal.

Unless the tradesmen has someone at home or set up call forwarding then I don't know how you expect them to answer your call considering they'll be at work.

You can call via the internet using your mobile? You obviously have an internet connection of sorts.

Why do old people shout down the phone and the longer the distance the call is the louder they shout.

Because landline calls (from memory, haven't use one in ages) used to have a delay corresponding to distance. So it sounded like the other person couldn't hear you.

Plus the more connections required meant the signal degraded and harder to hear. Which is still the case now really but phone connections are tuned for the frequency of the voice so in general it sounds ok. That's one of the reasons hold music sounds so bad is that to save bandwidth some of the frequencies are cut off.

We have a landline but I have not used it for a few months. Only use my mobile phone. I did contemplate making the line one way, i.e. receive calls only, but there is a charge to have this service!
Even if I get rid of the phone, I still need to pay line rental (for Internet)

5G will put and end to all consumer fixed lines. Tested speeds are hitting just below a gigabit for data and with voice eventually moving onto the 4G spectrum, there will be no need.

I had bad signal, so I called 3 and they sent out a home signal box.

1 Ethernet cable later and full signal strength all around the house. Winning.

A charge ? I suppose they are losing revenue, they wabt to cover it.

That must be it, 'losing revenue'
Our phone call usage bill for landline is almost zero. So BT are losing out there. However, they must be making money on the Broadband.

There is a good chance I will be dead in 10 yrs time  -- I hope not providing I can still wipe my own bum.

I do have a Nokia 6630 on Orange - I also thought it would be cool to have a smart phone - spent 4 days trying to get it to work when I found out the 4 bar signal wasn't to say I had a signal it is just there and light's up when you have a signal- my Nokia only shows a signal if one is there - I was confused - so needless to say it is useless here at home - This is on Giffgaf - I resent paying for two lines and have to think of wife who is smart phone dumb.
