GPU prices go boom

I had the choice of a gpu upgrade or a PS4, I chose the PS4. Still game on pc mainly fps games but so glad I have 2 choices now.

If my card died today I would buy a second hand card, not a new one.

Also, console gaming isn't any cheaper and people need to stop pretending it is. If you want to play Bloodborne, Forza 7 and Mario Odyssey, that's almost £700 in hardware alone. And that's not even including those games or the best version of the PS4/Xbox hardware (Pro/X). Plus if you want to play online add PSN/Xbox Live fees on top, plus whatever Nintendo will charge for their online service this year. Adding all of the mentioned games, online subs and the best versions of the PS/Xbox, oh and add a decent sized SD Card for the Switch because it isn't worth a **** without one. You're looking at £1200+.
Your argument is that you have to own one of every console to be a console gamer?

In that case, to be "a gamer", you obviously need to own one of every console plus a PC plus a mac, every arcade cabinet you can get your hands on, all the handhelds...

Yeah, it's not a sane argument.

Since this argument is about money, it's pretty darned obvious that people giving up on PC gaming aren't going to buy one each of every console.

So you make a choice on which platform you want, based on the exclusives you want, the performance and various other factors.

If you choose PC you don't get the PS4 or XBox exclusives, if you choose PS4 you don't get the PC or XBox exclusives.

No, console gaming does not cost £1200. It's a stupid argument.

If you want to play those games and have the best experience i.e 4K etc, then it certainly would.

You're completely missing the point. as usual...
If people have enough money to buy all the best consoles and only want the best experience then, of course they'll buy a PC.

You say I'm missing the point? People who buy consoles accept compromise in order to save money.

Saying that "You'll spend just as much if you are a console gamer who refuses to accept any compromise and wants everything" is pretty much basing your argument around a group of people who don't exist. Those who don't want an expensive PC but have £1000s to spend on consoles? Where are these people?

Or they buy as well because for the exclusives.
A lot of us are weighing up a choice between upgrading our existing PC or buying an X1/PS4.

We're just "gamers", not "PC gamers" or "console gamers".

Those of us who choose to expand into consoles are often choosing now to forego the PC upgrade. It doesn't mean we're not PC gamers, but it could mean that - if, going forwards, prices stay high. It means we will continue not to upgrade our PCs, and in not doing so the PC will be less and less able to play current-gen games.

I've already made that choice. I've bought a PS4 Pro, and now have no plans to upgrade my ancient 2500k rig. Just to upgrade my current PC would involve a new CPU/GPU/RAM/mobo and even that upgrade would cost £800+, keeping all the peripherals and current monitor.

Console gamers would be either a) PC gamer who got a console as well for exclusive titles etc. b) gamer on a budget who cannot afford / justify spending more on a PC, because lets be honest a good gaming PC including all the parts etc. is miles more than a console, hell you could spend more than a console on just a power supply or single component!

All of a sudden 'Geforce Now' begins to look like an attractive option for many...I bet Nvidia are all cut up about the prospect of millions of consumers paying them a monthly sub

I'm just running an rx480, have been since they were new. It's been running fine even for VR, gaming requirement have stayed mostly the same for years. Game developers aim for the middle of the market, as less people upgrade as often, old cards last longer for gaming on.

Switching to console isn't a money saver tbh. Not when the games are much more expensive and you need to pay a subscription to play many of them online. Also there's the very limited functionality, so you still need a PC for other things.

On the principal that if you can't beat them join them, I've been mining since the middle of last month with my Vega and the Fury that it replaced. I've effectively paid off half of a card I would have bought anyway so I'm pretty happy.
