Epidemic of colds going around at the moment

You do realise colds and the flu affect people differently, right? And they're sometimes different than previous colds? Right?

Some people can't handle them, others can, some people can deal with the sore throat, others can't.

But yes, tell everyone to man up, because clearly they're all just wimps and you're the epitome of the Alpha Male that we all need to admire and look up to. xxx
Not.? Sure? If? I understand?

You guys think you have problems? I've had two weeks of bronchitis.

In Australia. In summer. Temperatures reached 40°C this week.

Have not escaped this year, had a stomach bug the week before Christmas and the last week has looked like this:

Friday - Sore throat, aching legs
Saturday - Really sore throat, swollen neck glands, aching body
Sunday - Less sore throat, less swollen neck glands, less aching body, massive headache and runny nose
Monday - No sore throat, full blown steaming head cold, body aches back with a vengeance
Tuesday - Full blown streaming head cold, hot and cold / feverish.
Today - Head cold drying up a bit, cough and bad chest developing, ears blocked.

Travelling with work tomorrow, hoping for a miracle cure overnight.

Still in intense pain with my right frontal sinus. If I lean forward it feels like there’s a bowling ball in there trying to drop out.

Got up today and my balance is way out of wack.

Not sure what this thing is but its doing my head in. I could not ride a bike for the life of me.

Am ok sitting down but standing and walking is a battle.

I had that at the beginning. People at worked asked if I was drunk because I was staggering and doing the "If I stare at and concentrate really hard on where I'm walking to I can get there in a straight line" thing.

That was my last day in work for 8 days. No sick pay, either, which of course makes things worse. People have to go into work when they're ill and contagious because they can't afford not to. I was still ill when I went back in. Maybe I infected some people. Maybe somebody died because of it.

I don't have a cold as such, but once again my sense of smell and taste has vanished and I am aching from ears to toes and have been for 3-4 days now meaning I am getting little sleep and have to does up with paracetamol every 3 hours. I visited my private consultant this evening, spent roughly and hour with him for my regular asthma review and to stock up on some stuff and we got discussing the flu jab and the different versions used and how they manage the release each year based on why they expect to see, but also that flu like many things like this, is able to change all the time and comes in different flavours. He said ensure you ask for the 4 x point vaccination which will deal with the current nasty flu. Most people will get the 3 x point, that is 3 different concoctions to address the most common flu bugs, but the 4 point one includes coverage for the current one.

I had a flu jab about 5 years ago, and within about 6 hours of having it I felt rough like I had a cold and my face had a tingling sensation, so I'm really not keen to have it again.

I've been taking a strong dose of Vitamin D daily and a probiotic supplement which is supposed to very good in boosting the immune system anyway.

My luck has run out and managed to catch the lergy and feel pretty crap.

My sister had it last week and passed on to me - my Dad started feeling rubbish same time as me :(

Thought I just had a cold last week but developed into flu on Friday and by Saturday had the sweats, bad head, sore throat, dizzy, nausea, coughing up some nasty stuff (fifty shades of phlegm) and chest pains.

Tuesday night was the worse where I had trouble breathing all night. It felt like I was trying to breathe through water where breathing where after about 5 or 10 minutes I had to cough or be sick. Sounded like a bubbling sound in my chest getting louder until I had to cough. Would cough something up and breathing would be okay for about 5 minutes before it started again.

This morning woke up in a puddle of cold sweat, my jammies and bed were soaked with sweat and was freezing cold so had to get up. Hope for a better night tonight.

Erm bubbling sounds in your chest doesn't sound normal, the fact you have mucus and a temperature could suggest pneumonia I would see a doc asap, quicker you get on antibiotics (if needed) the better.

My supervisor came to work last week, coughing, sneezing and spluttering everywhere. Generally looking really ill, sitting in a corning (next to me) on top of a heater, moaning constantly in an annoying way. I told her repeatedly to go home as I didn't want to risk getting it. She didn't and hung in there through it and generously gave it to me and two other team members. Now we had to go off sick with it and when I got back, the bovine has refused to pay me sick pay. I'm a little miffed tbh.

I have an appointment next Friday at eye hospital - they rang tonight to confirm that I will go but asked them if they could put it back a month as it's only a check up - Last thing I wanted was to sit in a stuffy waiting room full of old codgers coughing and spitting.-- Did I do the right thing ?

Pneumonia did occur to me but it seems to have gone now. Still have a chesty cough and no voice so don't know whether to go to the doctor's or not. Did phone up the surgery this morning but only got a message saying that unless the need was urgent seek other forms advice such as the local pharmacist.

My family have been suffering colds all winter and up until yesterday I'd managed to get away with it.

Yesterday morning though, woke up with a slightly groggy throat which gradually got worse through the day until at 6-7 ish I was shivering with a 37.7 temp and feeling generally weak and feeble.

It's gone down to normal again this morning but with a mucussy sore chest it hurts to cough it up. Tastes manky too.

I've ended up with really dry sore eyes too for some reason.

Welcome to the club. I had a particularly nasty cold in March last year and ever since then have had a sore dry right eye. Been to the doctors a few times with it, they even sent me up A&E the first time in case it was Uveitis. Optician's taken a look (no pun intended) back to the GP in December with first a course of oral antibiotics which helped a bit, then drops which made it worse. Still not able to shift it, so just treating with normal eye drops in the day and Hylo-Forte at night. Actually hoping I do get a cold as it might help flush my sinuses out which I'm convinced might be the root cause of the problem.

NB: I'm surprised this thread has stayed up as long as it has so caveat is that the above comments are anecdotal, not intended to offer medical advice.

I had Aussie flu over new years for just over two weeks, at the worst of it I spent three days in hospital with a temperature of around 105 which peaked at 106.2, I actually thought I was going to die. I still feel rubbish now, have been left with a nasty case of pneumonia and pleurisy. There were various people in the same ward (Treliske hospital, Truro) with the flu as well, one of which died.

Anyone claiming it's just a cold have literally zero clue. I wouldn't wish what I went through on anyone.
