Ok so most of you will be probably be sick of these threads from me about this car or that car. Though the Vectra VXR has me interested. I apologise in advance for this thread as most of those who hear Vectra boil red straight away.

I will be selling my current car (leon tdi mk2), and I want to move back to a petrol. As much as I love my leon diesel, I now do less then 10k miles a year and with the government changes to MOT and this whole eliminate diesels from the face of the earth I think it's best to move on and actually enjoy a car.

Before even considering the Vectra as a potential candidate, I had looked at VW Golf R32 MK5/Golf Edition 30 (alas my last thread). I ruled them both out on the basis I felt they were a tad expensive for what they offered (not bad cars by any means), and most of the r32's I looked at in private sales had seen better days.

I want a car now which I'll keep for at least 2-3years with some performance circa more then 250bhp. A large hatchback seems the most practical option for me (mainly due to the large bootsize). A saloon is no good for me.

I have a budget of £7k Max, this is just for purchase of the car. So this budget would get me a very nice example of a Vectra VXR though I feel the same way as I feel about the Golf's and that is £7k on an old Vectra would be bonkers no matter how mint it is. Looking around online sale adds (pistonheads/gumtree/ebay/facebook/AT), it seems the going price is anything between £3k for dogs upto £6k for decent examples.

So having done my research I understand the major issue with these which can go wrong is the timing chain stretching. Now this doesn't fill me with confidence as sometimes there is no sign of this happening. Other time there can be symptoms though having this fixed via main dealer costs around £2k (possibly more) or a guy on vxronline can do it for cheaper. This is my main concern with this car, I have seen some adverts that say they've had the work carried out but some of this work has been carried out over 5 years ago. So I am unsure on this aspect.

The other issues with the car such as alloys wheels/suspension issue don't bother me as they can be rectified quite easily.

The exclusivity of this car really appeals to me. I have never seen one on the road for a very long time now. Maybe because most have died with blown engines, or the high running costs put people off.

I would be looking to get a 280ps version of the car so this falls in the £520/year VED. Though some of these can be the cheaper VED rate. Insurance is the same as my leon which was rather surprising. The 255ps can be cheaper though I haven't seen many of those for sale.

Tuning there isn't much else to do apart from a stage 1 remap. This should be close to 300bhp which I think is more then enough.

Apart from the interior being very marmite (which I can live with), I can't seem to fault it on anything else.

Speaking to a friend who's had a couple he tells me not to worry, though with my bad experiences of sometimes making bad car purchases it worries me.

I know somethings can occur in life though I guess the biggest concern in my head is I could buy one which is perfectly fine with brilliant history which may not have had the timing chains replaced, then it blow up on me.

Just not sure if it's worth the risk at all.

Back-up candidates are as follows;

Subaru Impreza WRX (ppp possible?) - What attracts me is the performance that can be had from these and 4wd. Bugeye/Blobeye seems in budget I don't mind either shape though I don't find them the most best looking of cars. The hatchback or wagon versions are practical but to me they seem to look very dated now. Consumables are reasonable and there are some decent specialists my way.

Leon Cupra 240 mk2 - Performance can be extracted for not much money. Loads of modding possibilities and it looks decent. A damn sight cheaper then the edition 30 golf/gti. So I do feel they're worth their value and can be had less then my budget with some change left over. I know my way around a leon so it's familiar territory. It is reasonably practical, and parts are quite cheap.

they didn't seem that popular in their day either, what were the rivals at the time? the mondeo st etc?

Funnily enough my friend owns one, he has owned a Evo 9/WRX, Astra GSI before this and he reckons this is what he will settle with. I can't see it myself but hey..

Mondeo st - Mazda mps 6 - BMW 330i possibly?

Surely these are all dead by now?

They seem very rare in terms of seeing one on the road or many for sale which are in good nick.

This is why I made this thread. As I am somewhat very tempted by them.

Forget a Vauxhall they are pure turd. I once spent a decent sum on a vauxhall turd. A fast turd, but it was still a turd. Never again.

Dunno if its possible to get one within budget but look at a Passat r36, quickish cars.

How many gearbox rebuilds did the disastra cost you :p

I don't think they're anything like as bad as people make out, but that said, I think you'd be mad to spend anything approaching £7k on one. To me, they're a bit like turbo Saabs / Volvos - fun to pick up for a few grand and mess around with, but not worth spending serious money on.

It's a shame you require a hatchback, as there's plenty of genuinely great, powerful saloons you can pick up for under £7k.

Mate of mine in Holland had one, with an Irmscher kit. Had a few under-bonnet mods too, can't remember how much power it had but it left most things standing. Never broke either despite being driven everywhere like it was stolen.

Funny side story: We were on a 6 month job, he took a deep fat fryer to site (the Dutch deep fry everything) and when it was dine he put it in his boot, filled with fat. On the way home he got into a race with one of the other guys from the job and hit a speedbump at 60kph, his whole boot was covered in fat.

Ah I remember you said about the gearbox last time at the pod.

Passat is sadly over budget, seem a brilliant car though.

The issue I have is I think it's a brilliant package for the price though that's only if I there is one out that that's been looked after and is for a reasonable price.

I was hoping there were some alternatives that I may not have known about.

All of the VXR I see in my town seemed to be owned by Barry. Who use the accelerator as an on/off pedal.

I can't imagine theres many around that still have healthy engines and gearboxes.

Gonna hafta disagree with your there fella. I've had numerous over the years and known loads of people with them (in Holland they're sold as Opels as I'm sure you're aware, and they are phat scene there, like the dub crap we have over here). Apart from an old Kadett popping all 4 plugs during a 1/4mile run (admittedly with about 15 millions pounds of boost) I've never seen any go bang when they're properly maintained.

Here's a serious question: Do Vauxhalls have different components to Opels? I ask because everyone over here seems to think that they're crap cars but having lived in Holland for many years Opels have a completely different perception and in fact are known as an incredibly reliable brand. I am also talking from quite a bit of experience here. Are these opinions outdated?

@Diddums Mine had 40k miles and was a few years old and the gearbox went, vauxhall wanted nothing to do with it. VXROnline was littered each day with people posting up about the gearboxes failing.

Every time i drove it, i drove it in silence to see what new noises it was making.

Was a cool car to me when i bought it, but honestly.... i wouldnt have one given me now.

I like the Vectra VXR. They sound good, look good and go well... on par with my old 420 Turbo which was definitely no slouch! I even like the interior.

But, I definitely wouldn't spend 6-7k on one. There are many much much better cars available for that sort of money. Especially if you only tend to keep it for a couple of years, you don't want to find yourself in a position where you can't move it on.

Fair enough, never heard of this issue before, does make me wonder if it was isolated to that model / 'box however.
