Police chief 'wants drivers penalised for going 1mph over speed limit'

Probably inevitable if there's been a massive increase in the number of people effectively getting away with doing 37-38 in a 30 by going on a speed awareness course. It's almost a daily basis now that I have people following far too closely because they expect me to do 35+ in a 30.

Did one of them not bring this up sometime last year and all the other police big wigs and the government basically told them to pipe down and get back in their box?

Sigh..... what an utter cretin :(

Unless I sat everywhere using cruise control there is zero chance I could never exceed the limit(s). I don't even think my cruise control works below 40mph anyway (never been bored enough to find out)

Anyway, what a cretin.

This is surely more dangerous, as people fixated on the speedo to within 1mph isn't good? It's like those motorway roadworks where everyone is looking at the speedo not the narrow lanes..

What is the margin for error on a speed gun?

What is the margin for error on a speed camera?

What is the margin for error on my speedometer?

This is just some plonker making a noise off the back of a kid getting run over

The way I see it if it was about safety car manufacturers would be forced to limit cars.
Mine has speed sign recognition and GPS speed awareness, just engage the limiter to those speeds.

Job done no more speeding. But also no more speeding taxes.

Speedo doesn't count it's a requirement that they don't under read at all.

Does yours physically prevent the car from travelling any faster? I have a 'limit' warning, but by the time it's gong'd off I could already be 20/30/40mph over the limit, or whatever.

Exactly. All about the income from fines. In over 30 years of driving I have never had a speeding ticket, but I suspect a lot of people will get caught if there is not even a tiny leeway.

These days I find a proper speed limiter absolutely essential - the limiter offers a set and forget solution to accidentally straying over 40 in the middle of absolutely nowhere. With the speed limiter engaged you're free to focus on driving without worrying about speeding.

Particularly useful in those ridiculous 50 limits that used to be NSL and feel like they should be NSL.

Yes you can override it by flooring the pedal though but anything but flat to the floor and it won't go any faster.

Oh ok, my two cars are obviously neolithic or I haven't bothered to investigate it too much.

Even if mine did it, I just can't see me spending time adjusting the limit and/or leaving it at 30mph :p

It is farcical, surely there has to be some margin of error involved... 1mph is a ridiculous thing to have a go over - most people drive at the given speed limit for a road, if someone cruises along at 25 in a 30 just to be sure then they'll tend to frustrate others and cause some pointless overtaking... if you're cruising along at the limit then at any given point in time you could be slightly above or below it and perhaps at some point deemed to be closer to say 31 than 30. It would have to be the most ridiculously anal police officer to want to ticket someone for that.

Can’t see this being feasible or enforceable. 10% + 2mph is a good margin for error both human and machine. Anyone doing over that arguably is doing it intentionally so that’s quite clear cut. But driving at 31-32 mph could easily be done without intention of speeding and to have such a non existent margin for error means you will only create a more dangerous environment.

Pretty sure a decent gust of wind would push a car 1mph over the 'limit', wonder if this numpty has a force majeure clause in his proposal :p
