You know the ones. You post a thread that someone famous has died and they go "who?" or someone posts "Top Gear is great, really enjoyed it!" and they come along and spurt out the opposite of "I liked that garage band before they were mainstream" as if someone's gonna like them and think they're "hip" or "swag" or whatever the cool cats call it nowadays.

But what drives these people to respond like this? What is their motivation or reasoning? Are they aware that they do it, or is it a subconscious thing?

This has always intrigued me, as it seems to occur in all manner of age groups, ethnicities, nationalities, etc.

So go on, what is it then?

//That's my crap thread for the day. Hope you enjoyed it.

Hipsters gonna hipster / They think it's cool to be a **** with the intention of being "different".

Basically its a pathetic form of 1 upism.

This

Because they think it’s cool to be different.

And this

You'll see it in tech with regards to say Apple products "lol sheeple, it's so overpriced, my Samsung/generic windows laptop/some android tablet had X,Y,Z features last year, lol" etc...

You see it in music, as per the example already given - the old cliched "I liked them before they were cool"

You'll see it with films, see the recent bladerunner movie thread. "Well achtually true fans will hate this movie because [insert some convoluted reason why a pretty decent film they wanted to hate before even watching was just dreadful]"

Etc...etc...

Awful thread, I preferred Theo.

I think it's an affliction of youth. I've reached that age in life where being cool or even worse, trying to be cool, means nothing to me. Anti-Fanboyism? It's not even a word.

Unfortunately there are a few artists where I do say "I liked their earlier stuff better" and I'm being genuine :(

But yeah it seems the 2nd most popular opinion is to offer nothing but contempt for the 1st.
