Once you get off the great plateau at the beginning of the game (think its after 4 shrines), the game really opens up. honestly, persevere a bit more - you wont regret it.

I must admit I only played Zelda for about 20 minutes but I had no clue what I was doing. I'm sure it told me to go to a point on the map but it no longer appears. I then wandered around aimlessly, got an axe, found a lake with some monsters, got killed and haven't touched it since.
