Hi peeps,

Need advice on getting a new car, so I thought I'd ask on a computer enthusiasts' forum!

Next car will be lease/PCH. I'm looking to get it ASAP really as the old one is dying. Who would you recommend in the West Midlands? Who would you avoid? Why?

If it helps, looking at something SUVish.

Thanks in advance,

FB..

Why do they have to be in the Midlands? Leasing can be done/purchased from anywhere, go where the deals are - not by location.

This. The wonder of the internet. Don't be picky on car and spec and you can get great deals. Limit your requirements in any way and you way pay for the privilege.

Never thought of it like that tbh. I thought it would stilll be like a car dealership.

Thanks for this. I've kind of already limited my requirements lol. Looking at the Kia Sportage or Hyundai Tucson. Either way, they're about £233/month for 1 or 2 models up from basic spec.

I have 3 go to sites at the minute
  1. PH Leasing thread - Lurk around in there and some excellent deals pop up (Ordered a Golf 2 years ago for £4800 over 2 years, Skoda Karoq this year for £5241 over 2 years, brother ordered the Jag XF for £6480 etc)
  2. Contract hire and Leasing - good one to find loads of deals, messy site but can be tidied up with a script floating around somewhere
  3. What Car Leasing - A lot of dealerships are getting in on the act now and have started to post deals here - some have even started to charge "Admin Fees" that brokers normally do.
Best thing to do is find a deal you like (stay away from options otherwise it skews the value of the lease unless absolutely necessary) and get a local dealer to match if possible. If not just order what you fancy.

Always look at overall cost and calculate its true cost over the 2 years, dont fall for cheap monthlies with a massive deposit unless you are happy with the overall cost!
E.G. The Skoda was £1791 deposit and £150 a month working out to around £219 amortised.
The Jag was £720 down and £240 a month working out to be £270 amortised.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

I bought our last car outright in 2008, so this is all new to me. Appreciate all the info.

Cheers

Anywhere - I've leased last 6 cars between myself and wife - Couldn't care less where or who they come from. Bolton/Manchester/Glasgow/Nottingham I think the last few have arrived from.

Just join some mailing lists and go from there. Every deal has been very quick/helpful and easy. Never had any issues with any online brokers so far.

Would NEVER go to a local main dealers again unless they would be prepared to match the broker which in most cases they wont/can't.

I'm curious, did you always choose "off the shelf" models for you and your wife, or did you have any where you've added options (and therefore had to get a custom build with added wait)? I'm currently considering getting a new Fiesta on lease - I'd be looking at the Titanium X but I'd like to tick a couple of extra options which would give the car an amazing spec. Curious as to people's experience when getting the options added...

Options on leases are very rarely worth it as there is no discount available.

Buying new you can wangle a few optional extras included in whatever discounted price they may give. This is obviously good as it helps with residuals etc.

With leasing you don't get that and your split the cost of the option over the term.

E.G £1200 worth of extras is going to add £50 a month to your leasing cost which is a lot considering you're not going to own the car and won't give you anything other than enjoying that extra for the short amount of time you're in the car.

Again its entirely down to personal preference...I hate adding options. It was an extra £12 a month on my lease to get the colour changed to anything other than blue. Its a colour. I don't care. :)

Although if I was buying I would be thinking differently. The off the shelf approach is probably best when it comes to cheap leases.

Thanks very much! I did a couple of calculations to the total cost of the lease when adding options, and within a few pence I was definitely only paying the option cost so, I guess if I was happy to swallow that cost over the course of the lease then speccing the options isn't so bad? So long as I'm in the knowledge that I'm paying purely for the pleasure of having those options?

Just for info I'd probably be looking at either a 3+35 or 9+35 deal but Ford added an option for LED headlights on the Fiesta on Monday (5th March) but this doesn't seem to have trickled down to the leasing companies' options list yet. The current options I've got ticked added roughly £20/month to the lease cost so not too bad in the scheme of things.

As above - the "best" lease deals tend to be off the shelf stock etc - Never add extra's as it's simply not worth it.

Taking your example above - £20 a month extra for LED headlights - really?? Don't bother. It's not your long term car, leasing is about keeping it simple and cheap as possible, if you want to spec a car up to your standard, consider buying it instead. That's my thoughts anyway.

Take my GTI golf - it was a special offer before they made a few cosmetic changes to the headlights etc on the Mk7 - I got the email, called up secured the deal within 60 mins of getting the email. It was sold out within 24 hours the deal I got. I had no choice of colour (white only).

Whats the deal you have? I personally have gone for 24 month leases in the past and look to put down a fair deposit to control the monthlies. As long as I know the overall cost is OK then I am happy.

There was a general rule of thumb in the PH thread I posted earlier.
Calculate the total cost of the lease and divide by OTR price.
<15% = Stonker of a deal bite the hand off
15-20% = Great deal go for it
20-25% = Good deal, do it if it feels right
25%-30% = About normal - not too great
30%+ = Expensive

Now thats a general rule of thumb and varies according to the car and what discounts may be on offer so don't take it as gospel.

To give you an idea:
  1. Golf = OTR £24k. Total Lease = £4800. 4800/24000 = 20%
  2. Karoq = OTR £25500. Total Lease = £5242. 5242/25500 = 20.5%
  3. XF = OTR £40k. Total Lease = £6240. 6240/40000 = 15.6%
And so on. HTH

The £20/month was to add Blind Spot, Adaptive Cruise and the Auto-Parking system - the £600 LED headlight option isn't even available on the leases yet!

@skaif Are those percentages only for a two-year deal? I'd probably consider a three-year deal so the percentage I'd be paying will naturally be much higher. So I specced one on the Ford website which came to about £21.5k on the road, and most of the lease deals I've seen hit around £11k over the three years, so that's pretty much 50%!

Apologies thought I stated it - they are 2 year deals as I prefer changing after 2 years.
£11K sounds like a lot! That's roughly 7k over 2 years? Seems like a lot for a Fiesta paying around £290 a month (amortised) considering a £40k Jag can be had for less!

£11k is a lot of money for a lease on a Fiesta for 3 years....

Yea about £7k for a two-year deal. It's certainly a lot, but if I look for other cars with the same kind of feature sets then they're usually much bigger and therefore more expensive cars, or have to add many options on to meet the Titanium X spec on the Fiesta (which is just about their top-of-range).

If you're leasing though, it doesn't matter how expensive the car is, it matters how expensive the deal is. A BMW 3 series is a more expensive car than a Fiesta but if you can lease it for £250 per month or a Fiesta for £300 per month, you'd be mental to get the Fiesta.

Rule 1 of leasing - take whatever is on special offer that near enough meets your needs. If you want something particular, finance it another way, leasing will probably be very expensive.

Just to counter - this just popped up in my inbox 5 minutes ago - cancelled order - march delivery (So I appreciate it may not suit you but just using as an example)

Audi A4 Saloon Black Edition - 1.4 TFSI S Tronic auto in Brilliant Black with Extended LED Interior Light Pack & 18" Gloss Black Alloys

6 +23 - 8k mileage - £260 a month. So £7,540 over 2 years. Now for me that is WAY better a car than a Fiesta Titanium X.
