Irrational tyre views?

I don't think it's love. It's simply a case that when someone is considering a £30 ditch finder, trying to put them towards a £100+ UHP is likely to be a lost battle. Whilst something like the RS3 will never compete with a Pilot Sport 4, it's leagues ahead of the ultra budget range, and those considering £30 are more like to be swayed by a better £50 tyre than they are a £100 one. It's all about being sensible. You can't force everyone on the road onto the best of the best, but trying to get the minimum standards of grip upto something like the RS3 would make the roads a better place for all.

pretty much! Cheapest tyres I have had are probably nexen n8000 that came on my lexus when I bought it and they're alright to be fair. Not amazing at anything but for a fat car like that they do the job. Getting replaced with RS3's.

This is a very good point.

How do you end up with four different tyres? Does she find a lot of potholes or ditches?

Regular tyre rotation should sort any tread variation out.

I would assume going to different places to get a tyre changed from time to time. Just settling with the cheapest one each time.

At least with Devanti seeming to take over every little independent garage and tyre repair shop we might start to see more similar tyres being put on cars

Thing is they are really expensive and average at everything. Not as good as a proper winter tyre in snow and not a performance tyre. For me it was cheaper to buy a whole second set of used OEM alloys and some winter tyres than it was to buy one set of cross climates.
Oh I totally agree. I don't stress over tyres and have never had a problem driving in ice and snowy conditions on anything respectable. I think winter tyres have been pushed quite a lot recently and I don't remember such a big deal being made about them even 10 years ago. Now every winter I hear adverts for winter tyres all the time

I don't understand people who complain about what others do, if you don't like it and don't think it's safe - book it in yourself and just get it done? That's what I'd do to the mrs quite simply because I don't want her to be in a car with crap tyres and I enjoy looking up tyres whilst she doesn't.

Goes against the advice from Michelin - https://www.michelin.com/eng/media-...rformance-up-to-the-legal-wear-limit-of-1.6mm.

The MPS4/MPS4S love is kind of funny, michelin are spending loads on advertisement lately and it really shows! Amazing wear, amazing grip, it's a miracle cure! Saying that I run continentals *and* believe in the winter tyre myth so...

I dont need a website to tell me what I can feel under the car.

After 3mm of tread the drop off of grip on the MPS4S was unsettling.

:p my car is not shy of grip

uniroyal RS3s suit my driving perfectly, good in the wet when I'm most likely to be near the limits of traction, and soft so give instant grip for odd squirt in the dry when previously coasting

That's an amazing price. Even the smallest size they come in, 205/55/16 are £75 before delivery, never mind fitting, from camskill.

225 40 18 ive snagged last pair they been there a little bit some customer messing him , next ones will be circa 100 gonna have them put on my spare 2 wheels ready

Be thankful you/she has the choice, I do about 40k a year in a company vehicle and when it comes to tyres I literally have to put on the cheapest I can get.

It really boils my pee, especially considering a half decent tyre can be had for not a fat lot more than some of these ditch finders. Other bloke I work with thinks it's great that he has done 42,000 on a his, when I drive his in the wet it's all over the bloody place, like driving on plastic tyres. Cretin.

Meh, stuff the boss, it's booked in tomorrow for two fronts, gone with some Falkens as in my size they seem a reasonable compromise between quality/price. I'll probably get a rollocking but stuff him.

Employers should not complain. What if you drive that car into a ditch due to the crap tyres? What's he going to say when you sue him for making you drive a car with non road worthy tyres?!

Presumably cheap tyres are just crap, not illegal. If they have the required tread then it doesn't matter if they're Michelins or ditchfinders, they're legal.

Yes, but if you managed to directly link the hypothetical crash being because the tyres were not up to the job. Then linked the fact the car has them to the employer demanding cheap ones be fitted. Could have a case. All this is in my head though.
