Windows 10

There's probably something in Task Scheduler that resets it regularly or when you log on.

Not 100% as I'm only going on other user's posts elsewhere but seems to be some speculation they embedded routines in the core of the OS in 1703 onwards to periodically force re-enable the update service or failing that start the upgrade assistant.

Well, I deleted four tasks in task scheduler that I suspected of re-enabling it and so far it's remained disabled for the first time in over a week. Everything seems to be working fine as well so it seems to have been a good move. It seems like we are losing more and more extra's in Windows 10 Pro and that soon it will be no different than the basic version.

The reason it was annoying me is that I like to have auto updates disabled so that I can update it when I want to and not when Microsoft wants to. I also usually wait until a week or so after patch Tuesday so that I can see if any updates are causing people problems.

^As with ChrisD above I'm on the latest official version of Pro fully patched and the Group Policy method works for me. For reference these are the three GPE policies I've applied, this allows me to apply updates manually and manage drivers completely outside of Windows update:

Configure automatic updating (set to 2 - Notify for download and notify for install)
Turn off Windows Update device driver searching (enabled)
Do not include drivers with windows update (enabled)

Is anybody having issues with Windows 10 Start menu not finding installed programs? I can install a program, search for it and it's not shown in the Start menu. This can be repeated on other machines and virtual machines. I'm guessing Spybot AntiBeacon is disabling something that Windows 10 doesn't like. I haven't quite pinned it down yet.

But for now, I found a very temporary solution online - make a batch file which seems to force Cortona to reindex.
Code:
cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages
rd Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy /s /q
StartIsBack works fine without the above code, so it seems to be Cortona. But it would be nice if I didn't have to install StartIsBack just to have a working Start menu.

^ That stuff makes me hesitant to upgrade (from W7). The main reason is I'm waiting for graphics-card prices to get back to sane levels.

RIDICULOUS - just done the latest windows update and I now have loads of "unknown devices" in device manager!!

e.g. on Intel(R) ICH10R LPC Interface Controller - 3A16

The update seems to have corrupted my chipset driver software?

I’m a little bit puzzled why Microsoft updates would interfere with driver updates after all these years ever since Windows XP.

They constantly have done this and it’s a fight against the manufactures drivers and MS updates all this time.

As someone who is on Win7 x64 and has been having thoughts about a Win10 reinstall, these recent threads aren't too inspiring. Especially since I uninstalled Win10 back during release for being too intrusive over updates and literally uninstalling some of my software (Daemon tools, gpu-z, Samurize). My experience was easily the worst I've ever experienced on Windows and I've been around since the early DOS/Win3.x days. The fact that Win10 is still a pita is concerning.

I have been thinking about creating a bootable usb setup once the upcoming big update hits this month - Spring Update or something?

One of my tablets essentially just refreshed itself after an update to 1709 failed - after the 2nd or 3rd attempt or something without any notification its just reset like 90% of my OS - all data still there but a lot of software not properly installed and needs reinstalling :s

Total garbage OS.

Unfortunately nothing earlier than Windows 10 supports the hardware - the only other alternative is to use Ubuntu but I went for Windows for a reason :|

Now running the spring update build 1803. Seems a lot has changed so this will take a while to adjust to. Start menu is filled with even more crap than the initial Win10 build during release.

I had a SATA win 10 install, then later moved the boot disk into a USB dock. It worked fine till it went to do the big update to 1709. It had put a setting in the registry that had turned it into windows to go. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/planning/windows-to-go-overview
Once its in this state it refused to apply the update, but still kept prompting me about it and running the update till it failed.
Putting it back on an internal SATA port still had the issue until I removed the reg setting to turn it back to a normal windows install.

Found someone managed to download 1803 Spring update on Media Creation Tool the same way I did downloaded 1703 by modified products.cab file.

https://insidewindows.net/2018/04/0...installation-media-using-media-creation-tool/

You can follow my guide below if want to get 1803 Spring Update right now instead of wait until 10 April.

1. Download 1803 Spring Update custom products.cab: http://abbodi1406.square7.ch/ESD/products.cab or https://drive.google.com/open?id=1pp19GWGjc0OLY4Rq6uV-Iop6z4CfFHUY
2. Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
3. Place “MediaCreationTool.exe” and “products.cab” in the same directory
4. From command prompt, run: MediacreationTool.exe /selfhost or PowerShell, run: .\MediacreationTool.exe /selfhost
5. The Media Creation Tool redirected to the new Spring Creators Update links on the Windows Update servers.

Done installed on VMWare worked just fine.

Small Windows Settings icons look MUCH BETTER than MASSIVE icons in previous updates and love the transparent column effect just like Aero Glass.

Now install 1803 Spring Update on my desktop PC. :D

Yeah I really miss Aero glass - hopefully they'll increase the ability to customise icons on the start menu and have transparent or more options to customise the tile backgrounds as well so they don't look like nasty blocks.
