Doesn't everyone though?

My current job can be quite depressing, seeing other peoples disposable incomes where they've got thousands upon thousands left over after bills and expenses every month, or just earn a large wage apparently not really doing anything.

How do these people get so minted easily????

I'm on 23k at the moment, and it's not enough, but trying to increase wage seems like either management jobs or jobs that just seem extremely difficult and taxing that wouldn't really be worth the hassle.

I feel stuck and feel no way of progression, you'd think there would be tons of opportunities in Manchester?

Perhaps I'm just too picky??

Shock breaking news that roles with responsibility, skill and specialist knowledge generally earn more.

The fact that you've used the word "hassle", I'm thinking the issue is purely you and you just want a lot of money without doing any work. If so, GD will have some bad news for you I'm afraid.

Can i tell you, I am not minted by any stretch but if i went out tommorow and spent 10 / 20 / 30 k I wouldn't really care

Money does not bring happiness, its not a made up saying.

I have been very lucky in the last 5 years of starting my own business. I have gone from having very little to a decent bit and a good business.

I have wasted no ends on things that i think will make me happy and infact they dont. I was possibly happier when what i had i feel i earned and what i bought i felt i worked for. It also keeps you down to earth and a desire to push everyday.

Like i say no means am i minted at all, I still have a big mortgage and other financial obligations. Money isn't everything, yes i can do what i want within reason. I believe it can make you sader.

My example of this is cars, I am a major petrol head and have owned a fair few high end saloons recently. I bought a a R8 v10 in Jan, come march for mortgage reasons (moving) i traded it back to the dealer for cash. I now have a Supercharged s2000 as a toy and i can tell you i feel like i have more fun in this than the R8 yet its penny's in comparison.

You can have fun on a budget. That said again we have just sold and bought a new house that will bring us a great lifestyle and quality of life, we couldn't do that on a lesser wage

I wouldn't say I'm lazy, I just don't think I could be a manager, I don't want to manage other people, but it seems this is the only route forward to progression. I generally do well and can pick things up, I like to improvise and help other people, I general push the team I am in when I'm in a position to do so with knowledge etc... I certainly am not the person that "doesn't want to do work"

Like Regy above, I couldn't imagine starting my own business, I'm not sure what I'd do, I've always thought PC building, but there just isn't any money in that I don't think.

The old saying is that if you do something for the money, you'll never be successful or rich. If you do something for the love of it, it might make you rich. Meh. :(

There's probably not many jobs out there that make you "rich" without any hassle. Unless you want to be a flash in the pan Youtube/TV star or something. I can't imagine anyone can get "rich" by simply working up the corporate ladder any more, unless you work in investment banking.

Plenty of suggestions in the 5 years to 50k thread, the OP didn't make use of them but no reason why you can't.

i decided to chase waves instead of money down here in Cornwall ,luckily doubled
money on a modest 3 bed semi i bought and paid of in 9 years in west yorkshire
surfing and walking are pretty cheap so not motivated by money

Go sell stuff, can make heaps selling cars for example.

Protip - it doesn't make you happy. I took a 50% wage cut (went from 60k PA to 30k) and I'm much happier now.

Compromise, sacrifice and hard work is what it more often than not takes to make proper money. Most people are unwilling or unable or both, they just don't realise it, don't want it enough or can't do it. Many then spend their lives finding excuses as to why they haven't and reasons of luck as to why others have but most of the time it comes down to the fact they are not up to or up for it. You can be lucky but reality is you will have to change you life/mindset a lot to earn like those you aspire to.

Having said all that, lots of money is not what life is about, it's nice to have buy give me health, friends and family before money and if you think money is a solution to life you will be disappointed. What it allows for is life experiences, expensive toys and posh stuff, but reality is that soon means little and just becomes normal and normal is what you have today. So make some changes or redefine what normal could be and aim for that.

Few make big money because few can.

Life only rewards the risk takers and hard working.

So what are you doing about it?

I have to say probably nothing, I don't like taking risks, but I don't know what to do, I'd hate to be out of work for months if something went belly up.

What do you do now?

Instead of selling them, I now buy them!

Still within the same company, but look after our car buying service now.

For me it was the change in hours which I wanted to achieve. I was working 6 days a week (off on a Sunday) and two of those days were from 9 am to 8pm. Sure, I was making good money but I was just miserable. I'm not saving any money right now but I'm living a similar life style and have weekends to enjoy.

I'm using my law degree very well...

That is the mindset of most people and why most people don't become minted. Chicken and egg for the vast majority sadly, so get use to it or change your outlook.....or be lucky.

As said, go see 50K thread, it started the same way so why (me for example) are not really giving you a 1000 ways to fix life. Some of that was done, none of it went in, time wasted....and no cakes provided either. :(

Would do the same if I became single! Cornwall and surfing, kayaking and scuba.
I don't need much to keep me happy either. I earn 30k and don't want to be a manager. Luckily I work in an area where you don't have to manage to earn 40-50k. Which is more than enough for me.
I would however love to earn what I do now but work 4 days a week. If I could find a 40-50k job for 4 days a week that would be great!
What's money off you don't have the time.

I also have an s2k and many times I've thought that there's nothing else more fun I can think of owning.

As long as I don't have kids I'm happy in what I have really.

Why do you feel you have to stay at your current workplace and be "stuck"? Look what's out there and apply and go to interviews. You have a job currently so this task really shouldn't be stressing or hassle at all really.

I can tell you this for nowt, managing people is a major pain in the butt. The biggest shock to me in my working career was when i started managing people a decade ago, up till then it was all technical and that's about it.
Now even with the depleted staff numbers we have went through having responsibility and managing staff is still mighty hard. Its not like a computer where you can you can install some updates of give it a thump (well....!) people have self issues, problems, lack of drive or care and one of the worst... hormones :p many of which you cant control or even tame.... yet your knackers are on the line for there output - managing is a real pita sometimes.

Its mostly true, you have to take risks and put major graft in to get up the ladder - unless your luky, a charmer or shag the boss.
What do you do the now? Why not move and relocate somewhere else.
