What would a third world war really look like?

WW3 would look like this for most people:

As a kid movies that were supposed to scare me never did, but this scene always freaked me out because even then i understood it could actually happen at some point

I'm sure Russia has a stated policy of 'escalate to de-escalate' which means battlefield tactical nukes. Stating it and doing it are two different things. Even if they did, isn't it a step further to nuke targets off the battlefield?

Land would be requisitioned and people would receive food for helping to grow food for everyone. Plus we'd eat rabbit like in WWII.

Hopefully that is true.

There are (or were) a few things that were still capital offences but you wouldn't be executed for them - though in war time all the rules potentially go out the window and things like that might be put in effect.

sure. maybe. assuming you got the seeds, assuming you've got the stockpile to live off whilst waiting for your first crop. assuming that crop doesn't fail. assuming no one steals it from your allotment overnight.
etc etc

We are in a pretty bad way in that respect in this country - hardly anything held in the supply chain, a good percentage of what we eat is imported and only somewhere in the upper 40% is domestically produced, our strategic reserves are pretty much non-existent and few see the value in "just in case" measures for preserving the ability in skills, land and infrastructure to be able to rapidly ramp up domestic food production.

In the albeit extremely unlikely event of something happening a lot of people in this country would starve depending on the season, etc. and ultimately the country only has itself to blame should that ever happen - which hopefully it won't.

During the London riots we had scenes of families out looting and loading their cars up. Imagine if there was actually a breakdown of society.

What we currently have is the greatest peace time in human history

'Third rock from the Sun'
There have been no world wars since 1945.

in the grand scheme of human history the current level of "warfare" is pretty low

remember before ww2? just after everyone had recovered from ww1? and that was just after the boer war the franco prussian war the russo japanese war the american civil war the napoleonic wars...

and that's just the few big names i can remember off the top of my head and we've barely hit 1700

All very fair points, I suppose I have a rather rose tinted view of what the phrase "world peace" means. This current period certainly doesn't compare with WW2 or any of the other big conflicts but equally the big picture doesn't feel overly peaceful, although a quick Google suggests we're experiencing an overall steady decline in war related deaths. Could be that I've fallen prey to the perils of 24 hour news.

Well it's 2 minutes to midnight. Stop. Russia do play the bluff a lot. Seriously doubt they have to will to start a war. Stop. They are trying to rebuild the old Soviet empire they once had. That's their main goal just now rather than nuke war. Stop. Trump to make decision on Syrian response today or tomorrow. Stop.

Hammertime?

That's honestly what it is. Russia and NATO aren't going to war, no one benefits from that and nothing big enough is on the line. As much as the media hypes it up to get more views, Tanks would literally have to be rolling into NATO countries in Eastern Europe before we fired on Russian troops, and even then we wouldn't consider using strategic nuclear weapons first. As mad as people think Putin and Trump are, realistically they have friends and family that they don't want to see vaporised. Putin wants the best for Russia (as well as himself and his friends financially), Russia becoming a series of craters isn't a big victory for him.

Current military theory suggests that Russia in a full scale war would steamroll the whole of EU in the first few days, well before any help from US could ever arrive.
Lol, I don't know where you read that but it's nonsense, yes Russia do have enough tanks to do that on paper but:

A: Most of them are in storage and haven't even been fired up this century.

and

B: Their air force wouldn't be able to protect them, the combined air might of Europe dwarfs Russia's by more than 2:1 and the recent war in Libya showed that it doesn't matter who has the numbers advantage on the ground it's the side with air supremacy that can hold/win territory.

Threads has been remastered and released on Blu Ray recently - The quality isn't great (hardly surprising considering the age) but it's well worth a watch again.

I've got no concerns re: the Russia situation. Politicians on both sides enjoy their sabre rattling and will jostle to try to find advantage but who really wants a shooting war between nuclear powers? I'm mainly talking about the fact that the World seems to feel more dangerous when it's probably the safest it's ever been. I'd be fascinated to see opinion polls relating to how safe people feel compared to other points in history.

As someone else said, it's falling victim to 24hr news feeds and so many 'experts' out there making YouTube videos or tweeting BS. After watching the news last night I had a hunt around the Internet for related news stories and I broke into a sweat thinking this is it! I thought I'd either wake to a Mad Max world, or not wake up at all :)

Threads is an all time classic, when the wind blows and the day after tomorrow are also great and well worth watching.

Thing is Russia knows they would get humped in anything other than a nuclear war so its all talk and bluster, cyber warefare would be where they turn if the west decides it really has had enough of assad and obliterates his infrastructure and fighting force with a rain of cruise missiles.

Just thought I would point out, Russia weren't the aggressors in Threads. Just because they know they can't win a fight doesn't mean for sure there won't be one :(

Russians are smart, especially Putin, he'll be a student of military and political history and strategy. The number one rule of military strategy is don't pick fights you can't win, and don't even pick fights where you aren't the overwhelming favourite to win.

Said it before - Fallout et al are merely to prepare us for the coming apocalypse.

Seriously, a third world war is going to be fought on remote, not WWI or WWII with 10k's of troops having at each other to gain a few miles of ground. That doesn't mean there wouldn't be civilian casualties even from conventional attacks let alone NBC. Russia would have no interest in boots on the ground here or in the US or indeed the other way round. It will be about crippling infrastructure and decapitation of leadership and command & control.

As regards surviving as a non-combatant, I can't honestly see the multi-cultural needy society we now live in rallying as one in some latter day Dunkirk spirit. The supermarkets and their supply chain barely coped when there was a few cm of snow on the ground, let alone if bombs were falling.

If law and order breaks down (even if the death penalty was revived for crimes such as looting) we will end up not unlike the Walking Dead TV series. Enclaves of people struggling to survive but generally those who are the most aggressive and with the biggest baseball bats will fare the best.
