20k Spec Me

As sarcastic as people are about it, the five series fits the requirements. If it's a hot hatch the Op is after, should have stated. I'd personally go for a Leon Cupra/Mini JCW/Golf GTI depending on personal preference and amount of motorways and B-roads it'll be used on.

I would not be seen dead in an oktavia at 21.

leon cupra, golf gti, m135 all come to mind.

bit bighead, obviously street cred is what matters most to you eh, not to say ive had one, but when i was in my 20's i wouldve been happy in a rover 75 should i have been able to run a decent 1.8 model, hell i had a 2001 1ltr swift, the box one and i was 29/30, not exactly an image setter, but was fun still.

the 3 cars you suggested are good, however insurance will be high from the morons that drive them.

yes all about street cred lol. If he wants a tool for the job then fair enough if he wants something more fun to look at and drive then octavia is not the car.

Pretty much every porsche and bmw m owner as the gearboxes are superb!
Noob gearboxes :P
I can understand BMW M as the manual gearboxes tend to have not the great shift but porsche since they revised the 7 speed manual - pdk noob gearbox

"Sub 7s 0-60
40MPG on a run / 30 round town"

If you buy a performance car then sit at 60mph on a motoway to achieve 40MPG - you have to question, why have you bought it??
I have a Golf R and accept that on a run (not sitting at 60) I'll hit 30s town 20-25...but i bought the car for that, you cannot buy a performance car and then worry about MPG for me, could just be me and a pet hate though...
Before that a JCW Cooper S brilliant car to hit the figures (1.6 engine) but was so so bad reliability wise wouldn't go near another.

You're 21 don't get the Skoda, GTI / M135i / Golf R / S4 / Leon.

All depends how much you're truly bothered by the MPG as the R / 135 and S4 will be lower.

I'm 24 and recently bought a 5 series estate and although I get lots of funny looks driving around in it I'm struggling to work out what I want next other than a faster 5 series.

They are phenomenal cars, yes they aren't sporty but I do nearly 35/40k miles a year.

7 series? :p

£2k insurance on a GTI is mad, but I think a GTI is probably what you're looking for.

Alternatively, get something like a 328i or F10?

I mean, my Corolla does 0 - 60 I under 7 seconds and does 35 - 38MPG on a run, and will do 43MPG if you really try for it.

I imagine thats not much of an ask with a car that is 13 years newer.

Well that's the other thing. Does OP really need to blow £20k on a car?
Get something like an 8P S3 for half your budget.
