Social anxiety

Yeah I get it at weird times, i have done some pretty wierd things that would be outside most propels comfort zones but randomly it strikes like I go into a shop go to find what I want somone is standing near and I'll just walk past and look around and walk out of the shop.

It's weird im not scared or panicking or anything its just like a strong aversion that strikes at near random times

My social anxiety has got worse and worse to the point where I find it hard to leave the house. I can't wait in waiting rooms any more as I feel like the entire room full of people are staring at me. Then that feeling of anxiety and paranoia manifests into anger at the people in the room as the irrational part of my brain blames them for making me feel like this. I end up sitting there staring at the same spot, while sweating profusely, with my heart palpitating and beating really fast. Its a really horrible feeling and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

To pass it off as simply a "lack of confidence" shows you have no idea what you're talking about and probably shouldn't comment on the subject.

I used to have terrible social anxiety when I was younger, still have mild relapses where I get a bit of a panic attack but usually I'm fine.
I'm worse when I have to be in a situation where people are going to be emotional as my brain often likes to mess with me and switches off my emotions in those situations and it can make me come across as if I'm cold and don't care.

Sounds like what my girlfriend goes through, although she can do them sometimes but only if I'm with her. She would really struggle if she was on her own and we can have random outbursts if it gets too much for her. While I'm proud off her in that she now goes running, albeit I have to be with her but she still manages. We still have plenty of upset moments or just needing to escape from a social situation, always try to avoid any busy times in town or busy shops as it makes it much worse.

I'm not really a sociable guy, never really speak to anyone and doing things like entering small independent shops makes, the type where you walk in and are immediately met with the sales counter make me nervous and scared to actually go in sometimes. For me though, I'd sort of learned to overcome certain areas of this due to my girlfriends issues. Like unless she has the phone number saved on her phone, she is scared to answer and I am still like this sometimes but I now try push myself to do so, as I need to be strong enough to help her. I'll mostly let it go to voice mail if I don't know the number but then will call back if I have to. Lost count of the amount of times it's felt like my heart beats out of my chest from simply getting a phone call or even attempting to call someone back.

Quite alarming to read of so many with the apparent confidence of a whipped cur and the apparent public facing personality of a someone in a medically induced coma ;)

Maybe it's because this is basically a computer forum with a lot of people who shun social intercourse for typing on a keyboard in front of a safe and placid screen?

Do schools no longer put pupils in stressful situations where they have to confidently engage large numbers of their peers with impromptu debate on unrehearsed subjects?

And yet weirdly I've had sex on a stage infront of hundreds of people many times without issue.

Sad but so true!

Poorly socialised when I was younger and never really grew out of it. I'm not a big fan of small talk and I'm usually content with not speaking unless I have to or actually have something to say, this often gets seen as rudeness or being shy from others but I'm really not.

This is me, I'm quite a private person too so I tend to respect others privacy also. I'm usually not that interested in peoples home lives and have to make the effort to look like I am. I'm much more confident discussing ideas rather than small talk.

Addressing groups I have no issue because usually it's an idea or something prepared. Small talk with people who have totally different home lives is the killer.

I admit to dozing off in assembly but I think the general hubbub, had something similar happened, would have awoken me ;) Is this feat something you put on your CV? No intimate details of your encounters under the limelight please.... I am squeamish about such things.

Stuff like that is only actually helpful if people are just shy, etc. in fact for people like me it is counter-productive (and I'd forever hate resent anyone who forced me into that kind of situation even though the might have meant well) as it tends to reinforce just how much I don't have a mechanism for dealing with people and it isn't something that simply comes from more experience.

I clam up in group situations. My brain freezes and goes into panic mode..‘I need to say something but what?!’

The fact that most humans are boring and don’t actually have anything interesting say makes me not want to bother engaging with other people anyway. I have to work though so I am forced in the dumb small talk hell when I am not interested.

Socialising is over-rated so I don’t bother worrying about all this stuff now. I’m quiet and introverted others will just have to deal with.

Well I have been asked to do it as part of a performance art exhibit since lol.

But it's more just a crime of circumstance

Having a superiority complex isn't exactly going to endear you to people anyway.

I'm often surprised by what people are knowledgeable about once I get to know them.

I do, I'm not sure if it's directly related to Aspergers (official not from a web test self diagnosis). I accept I'll never feel comfortable in some situations and I've come to peace with it. I just adjust things accordingly eg, I'll book a table online, use live chat instead of phone when I can etc. Luckily my job only requires me to work with a select few people whom I've grown quite comfortable with.

I'm in exactly the same position. I find large group situations the worst. In group situations I always seem to assume (or be assigned) the lowest position in the group. In both group and one-to-one interactions with strangers, I feel obliged to keep some form of conversation going, to the extent that it becomes awkward and strained.

I wasn't diagnosed until adulthood. I'd always suspected that I had AS, though was never diagnosed during childhood. Everyday is a struggle. I'm wracked with anxiety and over analyse which most people wouldn't be concerned by.

Put me in the social anxiety basket, never kept too many friends and rarely go out social. Always need a few days warning for invites to social occasions otherwise i dig my heels in and wont go.

Partly a product of having two parents with anxiety / mental health issues.

i find because of my shyness i tend to overdo it and talk too much, i hate silence when i'm with someone
it's ok when theres more than two people but when with just one other person i feel a real pressure to talk

Does anyone go dizzy when this happens to them, just out of curiosity ? I am having random bouts where ill be totally fine, say shopping for example. Walking up and down the isles fine. But as soon as i get in the queue to pay, my heads dizzy, hot etc. Very strange as at work/social outings etc i'm loud, confident etc.

I guess I fall into this category. I really hate talking to people at work, especially if it's not work. I've found that by being open about it it's easier to deal with. Point blank letting people know I'm not interested in talking seems to work, albeit mean.

I'm trying w product called perspirex on a recommendation for this. Literally used it for first time tonight. I let you know how it goes it you like.

I get this to a moderate amount. Its usually with people I don't get. Most of my work colleagues are presentation nice. As in they are pleasant but quite superficial at work. I struggle to interact and hate any social things. Now I just don't go.

But I'm introverted, so it drains me quickly being social generally. However when me and the gf go to our friends house for DnD and board game sessions (brand new to this) I am fine for days with 6+ people.
Is because I truly get on with these. We have geeky conversations and everyone is on a similar page. For me it's more that I have to actually truly be in tune with those in socialising with.
Before I've had circumstantial friends. Because I've never really found my place. And it's only when u find some like minded people I realised its not actually people I have issue with, I just need to be with specific types!

For years I thought it was just anxiety!

I feel for those who have it much much worse. Because it makes work torture sometimes

Thanks for the reply and yes if you could let me know how you get on with Perspirex that would be great :)

As people have mentioned a lot of it is to do with lack of confidence as I used to not have this problem and I was confident and fine and now I dont have any I seem to get this annoying problem...
