Retaking university year 1?

If you have to resit year 1, is the course for you?

Unless you need to resit due to extenuating circumstances (and then you’d usually be able to argue an exam resit as I had to), then failing year 1 has to be a bit of a warning shot across the bow surely?

Some people adapt to the different style and pace of learning faster than others - for me further education post secondary school was a pretty big difference and I took a lot longer than most due to my innate learning style which doesn't have good "synergy" with how things are taught at a higher level.

I thought university year 1 is pretty much designed so you cant fail?

Username appropriate? :p

if you have to retake some exams then you'll presumably be offered the opportunity to sit resit exams in the summer holidays rather than have to retake an entire year.

Your university ought to have exam regulations detailing all of this, you should probably read those first.

It doesn't count towards final grades.

However, lots have failed parts as have I.

Everything I failed was only by a couple of percent. Having suffered a severe head injury, which is a long term condition, has proven an eye opener. I have had so many problems that no one else has and it has taken the university so long to offer support because I refused to ask for so long.

To top it off some of it may be related to my broken eye socket and the opticians saying I have good vision not requiring glasses. But after insisting there is a problem causing me headaches and fatigue.... I now require glasses after extra tests and prisms etc.

I have resits, I'm looking past that to my other options as a worst case that's all.

My learning style is so hard to understand I'm still trying to learn how to learn.

Username - :p:p lol

OK so you've likely got quite a few weeks now until resits, you only just failed and when you sit the resits you'll have far fewer exams to focus on - so you should be fine... just get hold of all the past papers you can and keep going over practice questions

Like how many resits do you have - presumably not all of your exams?

Try talking to the uni about bursarys or dispensation due to your circumstances, They may be able to help with that if you have a diagnosis.

New course so no past papers.

I passed exam with a decent score and I have 3 assignments to resit and 1 practical.

I don't know what course you are doing, but year 1 should be unfailable..

I took care of my dying dad for my first year who died 2 months before the end of the semester.. I was working 20 hours a week and i still finished with a first, that was after being out of education for 12 years..

I agree with the other poster, is the course really for you? Trust me 2nd year is one hell of a step up in difficulty..

I carried out my degree with bad memory issues. Year 1 was easy... Only ppl who struggled were out drinking with people... Those who spent their time studying made the progress required.

You should have asked for help. You choose not to.

You will probably find they will charge you to retake.

unlikely - if you have medical issues at university then you are usually supposed to highlight them before any assessments - the university can then try to accommodate with things like rest breaks, extra time, assistance from someone to write the answers (depending on the medical condition/disability)

obviously if something last minute comes up right in the middle of exams (sudden illness, death of a relative etc..) then that perhaps can't be mitigated so well and you might need to defer an exam to the summer resits and sit it as an uncapped first attempt

someone trying to claim a medical issue retrospectively, after having been well enough to turn up and sit the exam and not mentioning it before the results came out isn't likely to get very far

obviously it is worth noting for future assessments for the OP next year - he probably needs to speak with a disability advisor at the university.

well that is OK then surely - did you get feedback on the bits you failed - if not then e-mail the lecturer and arrange some time to go and see them/attend their office hours and walk through the areas where you were marked down/need to improve...

at least it is just some coursework and you don't have the uncertainty of another exam to sit - just don't be afraid to ask for help in areas you're struggling with, get lots of feedback on where you went wrong the first time and then bash out a good second attempt at the coursework over the summer.

Thank you for all the input.

no one knows. That's an answer I was after.

well not really, your university should have some regulations you can read and you'll perhaps be able to find the answer yourself there - you can also speak to people at the university

you potentially have the answers yourself, you don't need random people to guess what the deal is at some unspecified university

Per Dowie's comments you are asking the wrong people - we can only apply logic, rationale thinking and ultimately speculate. I can absolutely guarantee 100% there will be people specifically employed by your university to answer the exact question you have just posed to OCUK.... Go in to your university tomorrow, speak to the undergraduate student support team (or whatever it is called) be very clear and conicse with your question - as you have been in this thread. If they are unable to answer then ask them who will be able to supply the answer... You may get slightly passed around but I would be suprised if it took you more than 1 hour to get absolute clarity on your situation... TBH I used to be like you but as you get older you realise the importance of being able to go out in to the world and getting the information you seek... If people cannot help you then you need to ask them where you can get what you need... Dont just turn to the internet for answers... be bullheaded in your search for information and you will find it quickly and can thus plan for the future. Don't be weak.

After a meeting with the head of course today they didn't know either.

No worries, i'll sort it myself. Thanks for your input Dowie, much more useful than the 'you must be a complete idiot because year 1 is unfailable' crowd.

Didn't call you an idiot, just said year 1 is designed to be passed by basically anyone if they turn up... I had something happen to me that would have had most students drop off the course entirely..
