BMW is extending a UK recall of its cars after the BBC's Watchdog found that vehicles could cut out completely while they are being driven.

It is recalling 312,000 vehicles: the BMW 1 Series, the 3 Series, the Z4 and its X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011.

BMW initially recalled 36,410 petrol cars last year over safety issues.

It said it now recognised there may have been similar problems in cars not covered by the first recall.

The German carmaker initially recalled cars in the UK after Narayan Gurung, who who was travelling with his wife on Christmas Day in 2016, died when their Ford Fiesta crashed into a tree to avoid a broken-down BMW.

The BMW had suffered an electrical fault, causing its brake lights to fail and resulting in the vehicle stalling on a dark A-road.

I really want BMW to re-call really old BMW's for something, just because it would be cool to see them all in the car-park together, outside a BMW garage. :p

Not really old, but there was an airbag recall on E46's recently and I'm pretty sure that was across the board.

I don't think this amounted to any E46 gatherings, mind you.

I had this recall last year. Fuse box behind the glovebox cable.

Many other guys didn’t thought and seemed to be a bit random as similar cars weren’t getting letters and owners were having to go to dealers to ask for the check to be made.

There is a recall out on my 2005 Corolla at the moment, I haven't taken it in yet :p

I think it would be cool to have a re-call for E30's! :D

"What paint defects? You're going to have to do a full re-spray? Oh no! ABS fault? Dangerous you say? Complete new ABS system??"

So I have an 08 Z4M, is there some more official checker online that I can use or do I need to contact a dealer?

Mine has cut out while driving once, fortunately I was doing low speeds in a village. I put it down to the battery (due to some other symptoms at the time), so I bought a new one and it's been fine since. Sometimes the idle revs drop too low when depressing the clutch and it stalls but I think that's an ICV issue.

Supposedly the dealer should contact all owners affected

Colleague at work just rang the local dealership to be told that his wasn't currently listed "at this time", however the impression given was that at a dealership level they were only just finding about recalls now being issued (in the same way that customers are).

You have a E30? Wow hadn't noticed you posting about it in every topic in which it isn't relevant!

so is this the same root cause as the usa recall ?

Wiring for the heating and air conditioning system can overheat and cause connectors to melt, also increasing the fire risk, even when vehicles are unattended. Four drivers reported injuries.

The latest articles are saying BMW advises you park the car outside as they can catch fire even when unattended. Anyone else remember those articles from the summer about mysterious BMW fires?]

EDIT - reading reddit further maybe it's the hedgehog - who has not replaced one of those ?
I bought an 06 325i a few weeks ago super cheap. One of the issues was that the AC didn't work due to blower motor that smoked up and stopped working. I took it out and the Final Drive Unit or Resistor was burnt up. I had to do a little re-wiring and install a new Blower and Resistor and it works great.
