NVIDIA is planning to offer a new variant of the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card which may not look different at all but hold a surprise underneath the hood. The latest rumors coming straight from China indicate that NVIDIA is planning to use a high-performance GPU on the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card which has been used on their high-end products such as the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

Maybe heading back to the Kepler era when certain cards were made with the older architecture.
GP104 based 1060, could certainly be helpful in improving the performance in the midrange sector.

Pascal has just turned 2 years old, and 6 days to go till 2nd anniversary of 1080 launch...

Please for the love of god Nvidia, let the grandpa retire and move on, and show us what the new kid is made of!! Stop milking the old cow already!!

Not much to go on it story doesn't say if card containing the GP104 will we get any extra shaders/cores enabled over a regular 1060. I suspect there just recycling old chips that didn't make the grade.

Did you even read the article or just the op's quote :D:p. Here straight from the full article.

The cut down GPUs will match the specifications of the GP106 GPU and feature no additional gains which many will expect from a high-end GP104 GPU.

On the plus side there may be a chance to flash these to 1070's. Knowing Nvidia they will be on top of this and it won't work.

Thank you clearing that up. Its wccftech and I make it a point not to open links pointing to their website due to garbage rumour's they will host just to get web traffic.

AMD will save us all.
Unfortunately, two strong competitors is too much for them - either battle Intel or nVidia and not both at the same time.
Let's hope that soon they will give GTX 1080 Ti a run for its money.

If any truth in it, I wonder if the low end gets refreshed with last gen higher end chips while next gen is for top end only? If volta based and the costs are high, maybe it would make sense. Speculating.
