I get a certain satisfaction from having everything colour coded, neat and labelled plus it makes everything so much easier to work with in the future!

What you want to do is go down and completely remove one single cable each day.
You'll probably find half of it is now redundant, or is cabled up to servers that no-one uses any longer.
We have a rule in our hosting centre, if it's on the floor for more than 24h it gets disposed of. There's a table in there for holding objects that may need to remain in the hosting centre for a period of time that's outside of racks. Luckily we're the IT provider for the managed building so we know who has access and can (and have) had people's access downgraded or removed for repeat offences.

We only have fairly small server rooms where i work (say 20-30 servers in 2 server rooms) and that's an absolute disgrace. We'd be marched off site immediately if anyone ever saw something left like that, don't they have any form of manually handling controls or basically any form of HSE there?

Im guessing something bad happened that caused a rush to sort out/fix but the downtime was never authorised to put it back correctly. things are working and the potential for all that to go down and not come back on correctly could be huge if disturbed, its currently working. Nobody wants that responsibility!, less so if its a contractor/msp!

Could be worse. One of our customers purchased several render blade systems from ourselves. They completely ignored the btu output and our recommendations on a AC Chassis and decided to purchase a acoustic enclosure. They melted a lot of components and were surprised when we went onsite and checked the enclosure. So they paid to replace the components, service and call out and then... decided to put them back in the same rack. you cant make some of this stuff up!
