Old man wakes from 10 yr coma dazed & confused...

I think what had before must have been a full tower then. I remember it was a coolermaster, built like an oil rig & you could have parked a car inside it :)

haha , cases like the Pure 600, Phanteks P400/ Pro M , in win 303 and corsair 570X/500D are on the boarder line to being full blown towers - in my views

H500 from nzxt does look a gem though

Hello Wireforks

Good luck with your hardware adventures - I'll leave you in the far more capable hands already helping you with that.

Due to your Baldur's Gate references I just popped in to point you in the direction of two Classic RPG series that you may want to check out once up and running.

Pillars of Eternity (a sequel was recently released also)

and

Divinity: Original Sin (equally, this has a sequel).

^^^ yes, been meaning to have a lot at that !

and as south mentioned Frac Design are solid like quiet long with price tags that are either the same or a little cheaper- nzxt wouldn't have quiet fans , and the steel is thin so wouldn't absorb sound well

If silence is important, have you looked at Fractal Design cases?

Thank you, no I hadn't looked at them. I don't know if this one is any better/worse than the BeQuiet but is plain & looks like it might do what I want:
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £116.69 (includes shipping: £11.70)

Hey thanks Daftbrown, they look like they might be my kind of jazz! As if my buying finger wasn't twitchy enough already... damn decision making is unbearable, I wish it was the wifes money I was spending.

its a very nice case and good price on sale but its larger then the Pure 600

could save a bit of cash and go for Define S- pretty much the same spec but older model

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/fractal-design-define-s-midi-tower-black-ca-028-fd.html

fans are about 2db louder then Pure Wings at max speed but in these cases shouldn't make a difference to be honest

Thank you, folks.

@lee32uk Yes I noticed they are pricey; quite a premium for silent operation. Are the other quality psu's really that much louder than BeQuiet! ones, anyway?

The Corsair RMx would probably be my suggestion if you want to save a few quid. It gets good reviews for noise levels (Toms hardware review).

You also get a UK based RMA centre (Bolton) and there is a Corsair rep who posts on here as well (Corsair Nick).

I have the RM650x, it's been solid for me and I can never tell if the fan is running or not. I'd look around for pricing though, £102 is steep for that unit.

That's a great price for the R6. It has very good build quality, has ok airflow, allows for loads of build customisation and importantly is quiet.

It's a great option if you want silence, and aren't concerned so much about looks.

Thank you, folks.

This is based on prices I've found & the advice you've kindly given.

I can understand why you guys are into this, as there's some fantastic looking stuff available. You've even got me drooling over some of it but the case isn't going to get a great deal of attention & may even end up under the desk.

I've chosen the 1050 as a temporary card which will be replaced by next gen. Hard drives can be added later. I am itching to get my gaming mojo back on!!

It would be really helpful if somebody can tell me if there is any difference in performance between internal & external cd/dvd rom drives. It looks to me like the read speeds on external drives are inferior, but I've read online that there won't be a dicernable difference. Obviously it will make a difference to the case I'd need.

Look forward to seeing how the build goes for you, board does look stunning in the flesh

Cheers, bro. The forum hates me & I still can't see your image under the spoiler!

For you guys it will be boring/uninspiring build I think. For me, I think the build should go reasonably ok, but I might have to ask for a bit of help tweaking that RAM; we'll see.
The sales guy at overclockers ignored my question about the eta of those motherboards lol. I don't suppose anyone here knows if it is likely to be days/weeks/months we're talking?

Looks like nobody wants to soil/degrade themselves with my cd/dvd rom woes :-D

Comments/suggestions on that monitor choice (which looks like a good deal to me) are welcome.

As for dvd , if speed isn't effected to much, go by price and how it will effect overall pricing :)

Lot of people gave up and jumped to other retailers that had the. In stock day one, sold out and the .restocked and sold out haha

Seems in-stock at £133 mark, all have jumped up from first preorder price of £119 :/

Cripes that RAM has got some girth to it nowadays, I'm sure I don't remember it being chubby like that! :D

It's very likely I'm being a bit thick tbh, but the price seems less of an issue (because both are reasonably cheap) than being able to compare the read/write speeds of internal vs. external cd/dvd rom.

Meh I really would've liked to have bought everything from the same place. The guy I spoke to today reckoned he couldn't/wouldn't price match everything, which isn't what the guy I spoke to previously told me. In fairness he did come some way though, but I'm not sure I'm prepared to order and wait indefinitely. Que se ra if I have to dance for it then I'll dance :-)

Yeah, ram getting a bit silly now, doesn't even. Need heatpacks and even 8 Pack himself stated as well, love Geil Dragon series with are just PCB with gold dragons on it :) but slow speeds :/

I'm not sure hanging around with you is such a good thing for me. I'm starting to get feelings for glazed cases, RGB giblets, and looking at that RAM might be giving me ideas for a tattoo...

USB certainly adds its own lag compared to drive in SATA cable, but that's not noticeable to human.
Though some external USB optical drives might be based on laptop drives, which might have some design points aimed at lowering power consumption.

Anyway internal optical drive behind door certainly won't break looks.
And unless giving current PC to someone optical drive of it might well be SATA model and reusable.

Looks like there's not masses of space left inside a midi by the time you're done. I take the point above about the drive bays, especially having looked at your image. It's been a looong time since I've looked at any of this stuff.
It's E-ATX full tower cases which make normal ATX motherboards and gaming graphics cards look small.
Like my current case during first built into it almost decade ago:

Of course those cases also take lots of space...

Antec P280 is one of those bigger cases with reasonable pricing.
