£6k for a hatchback, what shall I get?

I'm talking about the old shape, it got updated in 2012 I think
How can you be looking at buying the old shape for 6k  it looks dated, the interior is awful and dated especially the dash. It was never a good car. That shape ran from 2005-2012 and can be picked up from 2k now it certainly doesn’t look like a 6k car to anyone unless it the Cupra.
The mk3 Focus is newer and superior in every way to that generation Leon.

Op why don’t you just lease a brand new Focus? My local Ford dealer has the new ST Line with sat nav etc and 140bhp for £179 down and £179 per month. Great car for the money and is a newer version of what you had.

Well if he buys a 7K car after two years it'll probably be worth 5k, if he leases that ST line he'll have spent the best part of £4.5K and have nothing to show for it at the end, I'd really not want to be spending 4.5K on a 140BHP Ford Focus for 2 years.

I think his best option is a face lift Leon with the 140 BHP TSI engine, but he might have to up that budget to 7K. In fairness to the older gen Leon I know a few people who've had zero issues with there's but all had the 2.0 TDI engine.

The face-lift Leon is from 2013 correct?
Yes there’s a few 62 plates kicking round I think but mostly a 2013 onwards model. That’s the shape I thought you were talking about for 6k but I only seen 3 nationwide for sale on AT under 6.5k and even they were poverty spec with no nav etc. The previous shape 2005-2012 is far too old now to ever spend 6k on. The interior is terrible on them.

Found this, looks really nice and has everything I need: https://www.parkers.co.uk/seat/leon...0bhp)-fr-5d/for-sale/usedcfs-228934549690007/

Not many around though, I could stretch to £7.5k but is it worth it? I mean I'm planning to keep it for 4 years so will the saving I get using petrol over diesel should make it worth it.

Why isn't it? Road tax system changes are almost never retrospective.

Thats why a 1999 car is still taxed on the basis of engine size and not Co2, for example.

Not wanting to bit pick, but iirc the 2008 tax changes applied back to cars manufactured from 2001 onwards. Not particularly significantly, but an increase nonetheless.

It almost did but there was a u turn on it. They capped cars registered before 21st March 2006 at Band K.

I'm sure my 2001 Y reg 2.0 Focus tax was affected and was something silly like just over 225g/km co2 and registered in April 2001.

Did the band's not change somehow backdated to 2001? Wiki suggest it may have... And it was 2009 sorry.

In April 2009 there was a reclassification to the CO2 rating based bandings with the highest set at £455 per year and the lowest at £0, the bandings have also been backdated to cover vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001, meaning that vehicles with the highest emissions ratings registered after this date pay the most. Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 will still continued to be charged according to engine size, above or below 1549cc.

That represented an increase of 10% at the most though.

I did say it wasn't significant, just more than the normal minor increase. I was pretty annoyed at the time though as I was on a student wage :p But hey, people make entire car buying decisions on the tax rate and it's a pretty emotive subject for a lot of people for some reason.

So I went down to London in my nephews BMW 330d Automatic. Was so much fun driving an automatic that had a lot of oomph! This has oomees my eyes into looking at automatics, afterall most of my miles on the motorway.

He got his car for £5.5k and has full service history. Its an 06 plate but you cant tell. All he did was replace all 4 tyres with some really good ones. I'm looking into what kind of automarocs I can get for my budget, and I'm much more flexible with tje age of the car now.

So you have obviously realised an older decent car is better than a newer poverty spec hatchback :p
That’s why I think I said at the start of the thread drop the age requirements for your budget. I would take a 10yr old quality well specced car over a 6yr old 100bhp run of the mill hatchback any day. 6k would get you a decent 330, Audi A4, Titanium X Mondeo etc. All far nicer drives than the Leon’s and poverty spec Kia’s mentioned above.
