Road tax is currently based on CO2 levels. That's unlikely to continue for much longer.
Why isn't it? Road tax system changes are almost never retrospective.
Thats why a 1999 car is still taxed on the basis of engine size and not Co2, for example.

How can you be looking at buying the old shape for 6kI'm talking about the old shape, it got updated in 2012 I think
it looks dated, the interior is awful and dated especially the dash. It was never a good car. That shape ran from 2005-2012 and can be picked up from 2k now it certainly doesn’t look like a 6k car to anyone unless it the Cupra. Well if he buys a 7K car after two years it'll probably be worth 5k, if he leases that ST line he'll have spent the best part of £4.5K and have nothing to show for it at the end, I'd really not want to be spending 4.5K on a 140BHP Ford Focus for 2 years.Op why don’t you just lease a brand new Focus? My local Ford dealer has the new ST Line with sat nav etc and 140bhp for £179 down and £179 per month. Great car for the money and is a newer version of what you had.
Yes there’s a few 62 plates kicking round I think but mostly a 2013 onwards model. That’s the shape I thought you were talking about for 6k but I only seen 3 nationwide for sale on AT under 6.5k and even they were poverty spec with no nav etc. The previous shape 2005-2012 is far too old now to ever spend 6k on. The interior is terrible on them. The face-lift Leon is from 2013 correct?

Not wanting to bit pick, but iirc the 2008 tax changes applied back to cars manufactured from 2001 onwards. Not particularly significantly, but an increase nonetheless.
It almost did but there was a u turn on it. They capped cars registered before 21st March 2006 at Band K.
In April 2009 there was a reclassification to the CO2 rating based bandings with the highest set at £455 per year and the lowest at £0, the bandings have also been backdated to cover vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001, meaning that vehicles with the highest emissions ratings registered after this date pay the most. Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 will still continued to be charged according to engine size, above or below 1549cc.
That represented an increase of 10% at the most though.
But hey, people make entire car buying decisions on the tax rate and it's a pretty emotive subject for a lot of people for some reason.got anything yet alrasho ??
Not yet but leaning towards a Kia Ceed 2 1.6 GCDi (Petrol)
Very nice
im almost in same boat as you just gotta get the 6k together
So you have obviously realised an older decent car is better than a newer poverty spec hatchbackI'm much more flexible with tje age of the car now.

6k would get you a decent 330
