London cyclists "too white, male and middle aged" and this is a problem.

I see very few cyclists in lycra in switzerland, not seen many on bikes with drop bars either

saw outside the basel train station they had one of these
seems every train station has bicycle parking as well with many being staffed

I don't think I've seen a train without space for bicycles as well

The bus drivers seem to hate cyclists though since they are always riding so sloooow and in the city where I go they have bendy buses so they are really long ones.

I guess in Switzerland motorist attitudes towards cyclist is totally different though? since they are so used to giving way to pedestrians anyway with most roads having the swiss version of a zebra crossing.
seems like the main roads through cities are generally wider than the ones I'm used to around the UK though.

UK definitely needs some proper bike storage in each city if they want to get people cycling, not just a few poles on a high street often filled with bikes that looks like an elephant has trampled the wheels.
Its crazy how many vandalized bikes you see in newcastles city centre and I'm pretty sure they still don't allow bikes on the metro apart from at a set time between a really limited number of stations, then if someone with a pram of buggy wants the space you are expected to get off the metro for them....

Doesn't mean a study to find out WHY they numbers aren't as expected isn't worthwhile.

Differences in cycling numbers between ethnicities is more likely to be the result in differences in cultural views of cycling, employment and geographical distributions of ethnic groups rather then system oppression or barriers preventing or dissuading certain groups from getting on a bicycle

honestly starting to hate this country and the constant desire to force equality into all walks of life even when its not needed.


if women and people from a BAME background want to cycle I'm sure they will.its not rocket science. go to Halfords buy a bike get on it. anyone can do that regardless of colour sexual persuasion or whether they have a penis or not.

how about encouraging more white people into rap music?

I work in industry where the women wear steelies.

But I spend a lot of time in london whete this crap review is focused and yeah most wear skirts and heels there it seems.

Your "office" is university students lounge right?

Not an office office like a cooperate thing because you're a student so may be not the demographic being questioned hete?

Except the politicians have already stepped in to say "we may need to impose diversity quotas", before any investigation has taken place.

So you can clearly see the angle they are approaching this from.

Your second quoted sentence shows why the first is likely incorrect...…

You 'expect' to see a general population representation of 'oppressed groups' in whatever stats are of interest to you.

Why would you expect the numbers to be like this (with the 'like this' being the apparent expectation that general population stats should be reflected in specific data sets pertaining to interests or peoples abilities/ activities)?

I would suggest its implicit that you believe that if the numbers aren't as you 'expect' its because you believe that some sort of systemic barrier or oppression is in place?

I would say that you are starting from the position that there is an oppression or barrier to be found.

Its really is rather strange that your posting history shows you talking about how you believe that you 'embrace diversity' but when we see some actual diversity in action that goes beyond superficial appearances you start trying to say we should be looking into it because its apparently it may be the 'wrong' sort of diversity?

Office dress codes in general need to go tbh. I've only had one job which had a strict dress code and it just felt so outdated. I swear it made everyone more stressed as well.

presumably in future people can just identify as non-binary or just decide to change their gender etc.. in the summer in order to get around this

like if the rules are that men have to wear ties/have the top button done up even in summer then you could perhaps identify as female for the summer and have your top two buttons undone on your shirt.

Or maybe you could only identify the top half as a women.

When I worked at Creda/Hotpoint we were banned from wearing shorts so about 10 of us went in dresses and before the end of the day we put our shorts back on.
They eventually got round this by making all the women wear trousers.
