Old fashioned speech

It's as appropriate as Mr Brain's Pork Faggots.

Fag, Fagging and Faggot have history more meaningful than reference to homosexuality. The context required for each to make sense is wildy different to the context required for it to be a homosexual insult.

What.

The use of the word clout with the meaning of "influence" is not new.

It is often found in the phrase "plenty of clout".

Sounds like the appropriation of it by groups you're not keen on has poisoned it for you.

Hmm, just checked and it seems you're right. I honestly didn't know. :o

Yeah, my family use it constantly. Can’t believe it’s considered offensive when used to describe a ciggie. What is the world coming to?

One evening in the 90s, a friend and I, with our wives, and his kids, arrived at Tampa International Airport, FL, picked up a couple of cars and drove to Spring Hill, maybe 40 miles north of Tampa.
We dropped the wives and kids off to unpack, and headed off in search of a bar.
We found a redneck joint out near North Weeki Wachee, with a couple of bikers, playing pool.
My friend asked for a beer, and vodka rocks for me, and made his first mistake, being from Bermondsey, he naturally said to the barmaid, “Ya Self?” meaning have one yourself.
She didn’t get that, but he got round it by giving her a couple of bucks as a tip, then he jumped in before I could stop him, and said, “Got any fags here?”
The two bikers raised their eyebrows, but somehow we got away with that as well.
