I have a week off work at the end of August and am thinking of going to Amsterdam for 2 or 3 nights, as I have never been, fancy checking out the coffeeshops and just relaxing for a bit.

Anybody got any recommendations for a non expensive but not badly located hotel to look at?

A quick check on Expedia suggests £250-£300 for the hotel and flights is doable.

Stayed at one called The Corner House. Get a cooked breakfast with the room and its on a rather good location. No idea what it'll be like for price, but has just been refurbished. Has some rather decent rooms, although the stairs are a nightmare.

Went once about 13 years ago, rld is fun, plenty of zombies around, well was a long time ago I would probably not notice so much anymore. I think i stayed at a backpacker hostel. Cheap and lively.

smack bang in the middle of all the fun! Nice and cheap too.

If you don't mind sharing, then Heart Of Amsterdam is a great hostel which is better than a lot of the local hotels at the same budget. Rooms were clean, lockers to keep stuff safe, each room had a bathroom and shower and tbh, depending on your age it is better to sometimes share with some other holiday goers.

Get this, the hotel is also movie themed. Each room is a different movie theme, we got the very eerie yet hilarious 'a Clockwork Orange' themed room. Met some Americans and had such a great time we arrange to meet on holidays even now 10 years later!

It is located bang in the middle of everything, 5 mins off the square.

Last time I went we stayed at the NH hotel in the Museum Quarter - 4* and very reasonably priced. For 4 of us, 4 nights in April including flights was about £1,100.

we stayed in the easy jet hotel which was really cheap (and the room was clean & fine, just basic)

Also was in a good location a bit further south of the central tourist area, so there were lots of nice little bars and restaurants full of mainly locals.

10min walk to the Heineken factory as well which is handy :)

Stayed in TONS of hotels in Amsterdam. A few things:

Amstelveen is next to Amsterdam and is a very posh area, one tram ride away from the heart of Amsterdam. Zaandam is about 15 mins by train, Purmerend is about 25 mins by train, these are all single train journies and are very short and comfortable, especially if you get a double decker train. They run until the early hours every day, although Sunday mornings they stop a bit earlier. Last time I bought a ticket I think it was about 6 euros, but when I lived there, I never bought a ticket and just surfed everywhere, I'd see a conductor on maybe 1 in 50 trains.

All affordable hotels in Amsterdam's central area are grimy, slutty, skanky rooms to plow whatever brass you've picked up, so keep that in mind. I wouldn't want to take a UV light to any of them, put it that way.

We've booked lastminute's "top secret" hotels a few times and they've v all been great, most of them NH hotels, the best of which was the NH Musica.

Huh, I'm planning a visit back to the UK at the start of September, I'm going to Amsterdam 3rd-6th September. If you are around on those days, I'm more than happy to meet up and show you around. I've been more times than I can count. I'll be staying in the Bulldog hostel.

If you don't care about a luxurious hotel, the Ibis Styles that is on the train station is a decent place to stay. Went back in April and stayed there and it was nice. Plus it was only a 5 minute walk to get to Greenhouse which is my favourite coffeeshop out there

Personally, I think an AirBnB is the best way to stay in Amsterdam. Did it last year and it made the trip so much nicer but that was a trip over 5 days. One of the nights we couldn't be bothered to go out (had spent a lot of time in coffeeshops that day) so we just put on netflix, ordered a dominos and had a nice night in. Was lovely.

Same, got a great houseboat on prinsegracht, really close to all the fun stuff but nice and quiet at night, near to Paradox etc too.
