They will, I doubt anyone goes all the way through life without needing an ambulance at some point. Not sure its relevant though, the ambulance wasn't theirs to damage, and damaging it put others at risk. People should be expected to do the right thing because it's the right thing, not because it might be to their benefit.

I would not go for criminal charges as such, but I would expect them to have to pay for the damage they caused...

I would, their actions, what ever the motivation or intent, were illegal and criminal. It's not just the damage to that car, the loss of damaged/stolen equipment, and the loss of Paramedics time. We often run with no 'spares' - if that service was also running with no spares, that's a front line resources off the road until it can be fixed/ a spare sourced. I'm almost of the opinion thay they should be charged with wilful endangerment.
