My Mrs has a 7 year old child. This child swears, and has recently taken to chalking the F word, with another four letter word for Urine about the place outside the house (her house)

We are considering moving in. I said last night that my ground rules are

Kids don’t swear in front of me
Her kids don’t swear in front of my kids
She doesn’t swear in front of my kids.

She’s being “I don’t care if kids swear so why should I change who I am around you ?” Basically making it seem I’m the one with the problem.

Kids swearing, yes or no ?

With an attitude like that, I'd reconsider the entire relationship to be honest with you. Lack of willingness to even consider compromise when you're showing that level of commitment is a massive red flag in my opinion.

“I care if kids swear so why should I change who I am around you ?”

In all honesty, is someone who is happy for a 7 year old to be swearing really a person you want around your kids?

Sounds like a classy woman.

Also, pics. She must be a 12 given your tolerance of that attitude.

Why is this only an issue now you're considering moving in?

She’s only started doing it recently. Is an issue because in my home I have certain expectations. If she’s living in her own place, with her kids, she can do what the hell she likes. I’m not exactly a control freak.

I have three children, and would not allow them to swear in front of me.

I'm 41, and don't swear in front of my parents either, it's a respect thing in my opinion.

What's the context of the swearing?

I don't think I'd mind if my hypothetical kids swore but it's very dependant on the context.

It’s during the course of normal conversation. She’ll be talking about some other kid and drop the F bomb. For context, my Mrs swears a lot. Her father had a stroke when she was 9 and has brain damage. He has about a dozen words left and one of them is the F word which he uses ALL the time. So her kids, his grandkids, have been exposed since babies like she has since 9.

All of which I have sympathy for, however, I do not have brain damage. My children were not brought up around someone with brain damage.

I can't even fathom how you can be near somebody like that. It's a pretty big deal kids swearing imo. Totally indoctrinated at such a young age. Does it not make you ill?
