Designer babies could be approved in future, says medical ethics panel

don't see why they shouldn't;'t allow this tbh... allowing people to lower the risk of certain diseases is beneficial to the health service, the economy etc.. and if parents want to make sure say the blue eyed gene they carry is inherited then where is the harm..

I'm on the fence but I don't see anything wrong in taking any steps to bring into the world a health child that is free of inherited defects, etc. that could significantly impact their quality of life.

Absolutely, to address any potential health problems before birth better than fight with the already developed problems after the birth.

But, that doesn't mean that cousins should make babies ;)

What about all the people groaning on about how abortion choice with Down's Syndrome children?

Will they still groan if they can eliminate the disease, but save the child? I wonder how they'll shift the argument, probably into absurdist levels of stupid, much like the Anti-Vax and homeopathic crowd.

yeah it is bizarre, if they're happy to raise a Down syndrome kid then fear play to them but I'd suspect most parents wouldn't willingly chose to have a kid with Down syndrome and if they can eliminate the conditions (either though abortion or gene editing) then so be it

I guess the next level of absurdity is people campaigning for kids with leukaemia or HIV to still be produced etc..

in b4 they make it illegal to design a baby that isn't a perfect mix of all races, sexes, etc.

Yeah this is pretty bad news. Giving such immense control over the human species to select organisations is a recipe for disaster. Cant imagine humanity in 100-200 years time, humanity will be 100% farmed and enslaved. Can't believe how little foresight people have. Those who have this power will create the best human slaves, and natural humanity will die out. There are some things which should be left to mother nature. Children with genetic problems is sad but people need to realise humanity isn't just about 1 man's child, we are just too emotional, genetic variation is how humanity has gotten to this point.

Good bye natural life. We're now on the brink of branching off into a genetically modified species.

I suppose it s along term view

1 there's risk of another thalidomide generation thing

2 there's the risk of it opening up a gatica style world of genetically edited elites

Why would you farm human slaves when robots would be cheaper?

As for genetic variation as a species we are very very limited due to our history genetic editing will give us massive variation quickly.

High or low mavity features, high or lower oxygen tolerance etc radiation resistance all things that will be important in our new evnironments

That sentence doesn’t make sense
Lift should be a lot.

You where the one saying in the other thread that good looking people "chads" get all sorts of advantages weren't you?

If that's the case ending ugly is simply another medical condition that hinders people so if you approve medical edits why not cosmetic

not necessarily, it would make sense for example for it to be carried out on the NHS with regards to the risk of certain diseases

as for elites, there are already differences between different social classes etc... if anything something like this, if widely available, could achieve the reverse

I mean I think we're still talking about editing/making minor changes, it isn't like you can have a complete re-write - currently a kid born to two low income, low IQ parents will be more likely to have a low IQ and have a low income themselves (not that IQ is a great measure in general but it does seem to have some predictive power w.r.t success and is partially inherited) - might be better to increase the chances that the kid is a bit taller, bit smarter etc.. and give them a better shot at life

there are potential metal health benefits there in giving people a better shot at life, reduction of suicide etc.. etc..

if there is some potential genetic element increasing the chance of obesity then that isn't just a cosmetic/elite thing but can have knock on effects on health, mental well being

I guess the other thing is that if it isn't allowed/widely available here then the elites will still have access through traveling to some other jurisdiction where it is allowed - for example I know of someone who traveled overseas with their partner for IVF because they wanted a girl for their second child

I don’t remember that no. I’ve never used the word chads!

You seem to think everyone will have access to this. No they wont. It will simply create a bigger divide in humanity, a bigger divide between the advantaged and disadvantaged, for goodness sake please think people :(. Some humans cant even get basic healthcare today but some will be getting genetically modified. That's horrible news for all humanity.

I have read that the Queen doesn't like potatoes. And I am going to ask - is there anything in potatoes that is potentially harmful, so the Queen avoids it?

About beauty - yes - imagine a society of just beautiful people - it would be more pleasant for everyone.
Everyone is looking for a beautiful partner, and the less beautiful have less chances to get a beautiful partner.

The career of choice then would be divorce lawyer. Could you imagine staying faithful to the same woman for 20 odd years when every other woman who wants you is an absolute stunner!
