Form and psychology will play a huge part. Liverpools squad hasn’t got the depth of city either which could be a problem in the latter half of the season and/or there key are injuries.

I think you tend to judge a manager on how much he has spent rather than the net spend. Liverpool have been lucky enough to have a couple of top players to sell at the right time to make huge money. I imagine that another windfall will be on the way if Salah comes close to repeating last seasons form as well. Make no mistake, Liverpool should be looking to compete for the league this season after their spending over the past few seasons coupled with the squad they have.

I'm not sure I judged Klopp at all, I was simply replying to Rids post about the amount of money being spent and the ambition of our owners. The reality is we've not spent a great deal more since Klopp's arrival than we had previously been spending under FSG, the difference has been how smart we've been in the transfer market in recent years.

But in response to your point, yes and no. On one hand you can say a manager has spent x therefore the side should progress this much however if you're funding that spending through sales then you've got to replace what's gone out before you can improve. Liverpool weren't lucky that Coutinho left for Barca (that's absurd!) or Suarez left before and so on, that's just the situation the club found themselves in and the key is making sure you get as much money as possible and reinvesting it as smartly as possible. Many a time we've seen a club get a huge windfall from selling a star player and ending up worse off because they've spent badly. In recent years we've bought and sold very well and that has contributed to us being in a position today where we can spend upwards of £60m on a goalkeeper.

As for Salah, nobody can afford him now let alone if he bangs in another 40 goals this coming season.

edit: regarding challenging for the title. That would be a big leap, especially given the strength in depth City have but we're cetainly bridging that gap and putting ourselves in the position to push them closest.

I'm genuinely surprised that the figures are that low - that looks like some fantastic work in the transfer market then, especially if the Alisson and Fekir deals pan out.

I think the point still remains, on paper your squad has everything you need to challenge for the title this year, if you've managed to achieve such a strong squad with so little overall spend then that just makes everything seem more impressive.

To challenge City will probably be a step too far this season. Assuming we do complete the Alisson deal then I think we've got a comparable back 6 (keeper, back 4 and holding midfielder) both in terms of starters and strength in depth and probably even have greater depth in the 2 other midfield roles (but obviously not quite the quality of KDB & Silva) but it's the strength in depth of the attacking positions that really separates City. There's practically no drop off in quality for City with Aguero, Jesus, Sterling, Sane, Bernando Silva & Mahrez. We have our front 3 then it's a big drop to Shaqiri and a further drop down to Solanke (I'm assuming Ings, Sturridge & Origi all leave). Even adding Fekir, who I suspect has been lined up more as a creative midfield option that can cover the front 3 rather than an out and out attacker, we're still a fair way short of City.

Lovren's been playing pretty well for quite a while now but yea, we could do with another CB in an ideal world. There has been some speculation that we're in the market for one but who knows.

It'll be interesting to see whether Gomez actually moves into the centre this season. With Trent just emerging and Clyne out for almost all of last season he was forced to play as a RB last season.
 
One move that slipped under the radar was Seri to Fulham. I can remember not long ago there was talks of Arsenal,
Chelsea, even Barca being after him and he ends up at Fulham for £18m!

To me, sounds like no one made their offer concrete and Seri has come to Fulham possibly in the hope that a good season will help him get noticed more and a better move next summer. Bit cynical, but I can’t see why a player of his quality would look to Fulham as a long term option?
 
Judging by Sarri’s comments today, it would appear that the new Chelsea man will be another one with virtually zero power when it comes to transfers. The traditional manager is becoming a dying breed. They’re all head coaches now. Even we’ve gone down the coach rather than manager route.

I see it like when Shaqiri went to Stoke, I thought then he could have done better.

Alisson would be a huge signing for us but feel really sorry for Ward.

He was outstanding by all accounts during his loan spells, was brought back to the club at a time when our first and second choice keepers were absolutely woeful but never got a look in. Fast forward to the summer and Klopp finally appears to have promised him a crack at the number 1 jersey and we buy Alisson.

Honestly think we should've given him a fair crack long before now because we'll probably never know if he was good enough for us or not now.

Edit: Still having nightmares about show pony though. Over paid by £13.5 million.
 
This keep news can only be bettered if we announce him and fekir at same time!

With the team were building we must imo win at least a cup next season.

Ward deserved a run before we even got Karius to be fair to him, he should be allowed s move if it comes up.

Problem is if klopp let's him and migs go he will need to be getting a third choice back up, however I can also see Karius asking to go too if I was him this just signals the end

If you're at the club for 12 months and not getting picked ahead of Mignolet & Karius, there must be a reason why. And the stuff about him being given a chance to earn the number 1 spot was nothing more than games from us in relation to the Alisson deal. You only have to look back at everything the club were briefing the local press about that deal, it was all about us cooling our interest and telling Alisson's camp not to expect a bid because the fee was too high etc. It was the same from Roma's end with them claiming they weren't selling him at all and or it would take at least €90m for them to consider letting him go. It's all part of the negotiation with neither side wanting to show their hand first.

It'll be interesting to see who's our number 2 going into the season. Mignolet's made it clear he doesn't want to be backup so it's fair to assume he's off, it's then just a question of what happens with Karius. We can't sell him now so does he stay as number 2 or go out on loan? If it's the latter then I guess Ward stays as number 2 and we get to see him in the Cup games next season.
 
Well if he fails for us we can't say klopp didn't try fix the position.

If we get another cam weather that's fekir or not and a cb in I think we're fine for next year.

We then need to focus on getting rid of deadwood e.g. Markovic
 
Danny Ward off to Leicester? Well I guess that means Karius is staying as number 2.

I've decided that we actually paid £66m for Salah and are signing Alisson for £36m - it looks better for all concerned.
