Hi,
I've decided to attach my 50" 4K TV to my PC via HDMI as I wanted to play games using an Xbox controller whilst sat on the couch :D
As I only have a 1050Ti I wondered what card I should upgrade to.
I'm not so keen on the 1080 prices if I'm being honest. Would a 1070 manage it?
Games I play at the moment on PC are Destiny 2 and Final Fantasy XIV.
cheers

I think the only genuine 4K gaming gpu if you like full detail levels out now is the 1080ti... even that is not quite there imo...

So as you do not want to stretch to those levels if i were you i would wait and look at the 1170 when it comes out. I would guess this will come at something somewhere in the middle of a 1080 and 1080ti at hopefully 1070- 1070ti prices.

IF you really must buy now but dont want to go for 1080 or 1080ti i would be considering a 1070ti and overclock the balls off it.

Thanks for the prompt reply. When are the new cards due, do you know?

Oh and what about AMD cards?

With regards full details I am not that bothered really. As long as I have good frame rates with medium settings.

I cant help you on AMD sorry.... last AMD card i had was ages ago. AMD do a decent enough 1080p card but AFAIK nothing capable of 4K really, but again i am no expert.

as for when they are out. I am hoping for end of August / Early September but its all guess work right now.

no problem... if you are happy on medium settings btw that makes life much easier.. personally i would prefer full detail and game at 1080p. (indeed this is what i am doing on my 4K TV)

the 1070ti may be a good fit for you then. I wonder however if something like an Xbox1 X or PS4 pro may fit your gaming habits better however? I know my PS4 pro, whilst technically weak sauce actually runs games at close to 4K better than my pc does right now.... (i am itching to upgrade my gpu as well, but trying to wait till next gen)

of course consoles you have to pay for online, and, (especially with ps4 pro) is unlikley to let you play online with PC players.

Radeon RX Vega 64 is capable of very decent 4K gaming:

Max settings at 3840x2160: Average framerate:

Battlefield 1: 60 FPS;
Civilization VI: 57 FPS;
COD: Infinite Warfare: 72 FPS;
Dawn of War III: 40 FPS;
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: 31 FPS;
Dishonored II: 40 FPS;
Doom: 61 FPS;
F1 2016: 58 FPS;
Fallout 4: 60 FPS;
Ghost Recon Wildlands: 39 FPS;
GTA V: 58 FPS;
Hitman: 54 FPS;
Prey: 47 FPS;
Rainbox Six: Siege: 64 FPS;
Resident Evil 7: 50 FPS;
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 39 FPS;
Sniper Ellite 4: 47 FPS;
Styx: Shards of Darkness: 36 FPS;
The Witcher 3: 42 FPS;
Watch Dogs 2: 27 FPS.

Already using a DS4 from the sofa on my 4K TV for my PC gaming.

I’d wait it out for a month or two. People are hoping that the next Nvidia gen is almost here.

I’m going to wait for the 1180Ti personally but I reckon a 1180 would be just fine and out considerably sooner.

I have an overclocked 1070Ti which I sometimes use with a 55" 4K OLED at 60Hz.

Runs fine on most games and you don't need the settings at max levels with that res anyway IMO. No doubt performance will vary between game titles though.

Why are people talking about how big their TV is in inches? A 27" 4k and a 55% 4k panel both require the same processing power.

When people talk about tv's it's always the first thing you say. If my mate says to me "I got a new tv" and I ask what kind he would say something like "65 LG oled"

This is how people talk about tv's.

It's called getting all the facts in. Same reason you have your screen dimensions in your sig....

The 1070ti would be the lowest card I would want to use at 4k, it should run destiny 2 pretty well.

Acording to this benchmark destiny 2 with 1070ti would average 60fps on high at 4k

Final fantasy 15 highest settings will only get 30 fps at 4k though even with 1070ti.

As others have said next gen should bring more 4k capable cards.

Some 4k TV's will run 1440p which is also an option on more demanding games.

It's just odd, it's irrelevant to the question.

Sure if you are quoting your full specs, but just asking about what GPU, it's odd to slap in there. People don't tend to do it with monitors. I find it just reads really oddly with this kind of question is all.

It's like saying will this engine mod improve my performance in my RED Fiesta ST. It's true i'll grant you but just clutters the details.

When people talk about tv's they mention the size this is normal everyone does it, get used to it.

Not relevant in anyway to your question, but I also game on my living room TV, best thing I ever did was buy a Razer Turret, there’s other wireless gaming devices out, but with this I can use my K/M and still be competive in every game multiplayer game ive played.

Back to your question 1070, vega54, 1070ti, 1080, vega64 and the 1080ti are your only options, but you won’t be maxing many games out at 60hz I’m afraid

Do you plan to switch TV to one supporting Freesync for the XboneX? (btw whats your TV model?)
If so get a Vega 64.

Otherwise a GTX1070Ti and reduce the graphic settings from "Ultra" to "High" you will be OK.
The cheapest Ti goes for just £50 over the normal 1070 makes better sense, given that there is an average of 20% perf difference at 4K resolution.
