Well have you read them, they are dodgy I just can't see how you would joke like that. Maybe some do. Anyway as someone said, Disney being very children orientated I guess they thought nip it in the bud asap to prevent potential firestorm and loss of income.

Was it actually Disney that made the call? That surprises me in some way. Although Disney have a family friendly image to protect, Marvel studios is pretty much run independently of Disney and Kevin Feige is the primary decision maker.

The tweets were pretty bad and it does go beyond what is acceptable. However it was quite a long time ago and I would be surprised Disney didn't act sooner if they had a real problem with it considering the time he had to make 2 successful movies for them. Coincidentally he had been very vocal towards Trump and it wasnt until conservative pundits had raised the issue to Disney that it became a problem. He did have dirt to dig up but I feel it was more politically motivated than the actual tweets themselves.

Marvel has always been able to manage everything to do with their movies without interference, particularly the creative choices and how they make their movies which was one of the conditions when they went to Disney. So I guess this was an exception and Marvel must have had to back this decision whether they like it or not. Shame really as JG deserved a lot of credit to helping Marvel to where they are today.

Another day, another outrage mob ruining someone's life. There's some irony of course, because he supported the firing of Roseanne Barr, and I'm not so enlightened that I can't find that amusing. But this needs to stop. People don't deserve to lose their jobs because of some ill considered jokes. This moral grandstanding is a bad look.

And before anyone says it, yes they were jokes. Not funny ones, but jokes nonetheless. What else could possibly have been the motivation for posting those things?

When he made the posts he wasn't directing Disney flicks either he was involved in directing/screenplay for dark comedies with rape scenes, and a comedy series about pornography featuring actual porn stars.

Apparently Disney were just fine with that (and his the smaller Internet storm about other comments he had made online around the same time) but suddenly decided he had to go some six to eight years later when they were 'surprised' by publicly accessible social media posts that were brought up by someone with an axe to grind.


Something stinks about Disney actions here, no doubt.

What he wrote was far worse than what Roseanne Barr wrote. If people who support him came out as strongly in support of her, I'd take their position more seriously. As things stand, there's a lot of "The same thing is different when people we agree with do it".

In cases like this, take for instance Kevin Spacey/Harvey Weinstein, what normal people see as a quick hasty firing CAN, but not will, turn into something a lot bigger.

I.E. They know something else that is hidden that they don't want to come out, which will if people keep digging, so Fire the guy ASAP as to draw a line under it and hope that finishes it.

Agreed; even if there are no more skeletons in his closet (for which no doubt there is a full army of people digging in to every aspect of his past in the hope of finding) they probably wanted to act decisively and quickly to avoid the media storm brewing up and then being backed into a corner where they would seem to be only acting because of the pressure.

As for the content of the jokes, I hear pretty similar stuff every week in the office, or spoken by friends. Closed circles however rather than public.

It's more about perceptions/PR tbh...

I mean Hollywood was happy for a guy who drugged and anally raped a 13 year old girl awarded an Oscar while a fugitive from justice and unable to set foot in the US. People who are now prominent in the #MeToo campaign were happy to give him a standing ovation.

They don't really care that he made paedophilia jokes, they care that lots of publicity is being made about the fact he made paedophilia jokes and the potential impact on their brand, their revenue from the films he's involved in etc..
